Sadly, we all know about the Zendaya and Guiliana Rancic “pitchouli oil” saga after Zendaya showed up at this year’s Oscars sporting gorgeous dreadlocks in an attempt to make a statement “to remind people of colour that our hair is good enough”.
Well Zendaya, Barbie heard your statement, saw the beauty in your natural hair endeavours and raised you an Oscars look-alike Barbie, complete with dreads.
On the red carpet of the Barbie Rock ‘n Royals Concert Experience (a benefit for VH1’s Save the Music Foundation), which Zendaya hosted on Saturday at the Hollywood Palladium, Zendaya proudly showed off her very own doppelgänger Barbie.
“I’m excited to be part of the new direction the Barbie brand is headed, specifically with how they are celebrating diversity and encouraging kids to raise their voices,” Zendaya said about the Zendaya Barbie. “It’s a positive message to send to my fans, including my nieces, who are coming with me to the concert.”
That “new direction” Zendaya is referring to is the Barbie Fashionista line of 23 new dolls featuring eight skin tones, 14 sculpts, 18 eye colours and 23 different hair colours.
Though the Zendaya doll is not included in this line – she’s a one-of-a-kind creation – it smells like success to us.
