The acclaimed second season of Ugly Betty will be screened in October on Sony Channel (DStv Channel 127) at 19:05 weekday. America Ferrera is back as the quintessential plain Jane, Betty Suarez – and this time she’s brighter, bolder and unquestionably Betty-er.
One of our favourite local designers, Gert Johan Coetzee, has teamed up with the Sony Channel to create his own looks inspired by Ugly Betty in conjunction with the highly anticipated second season.

We also sat down with GJC in an exclusive interview to find out more about his creative process behind the looks and what inspires him:
1.. What inspires your love for fashion as a fashion designer?
The beautiful people I work with and their personalities. They inspire me and this allows me to bring life to my creativity.
2. What do love about Ugly Betty and which character stands out for you in the series?
I love the quirkiness of the show. My favourite character is between Wilhelmina, Betty and Amanda. And then there’s also Marc that brings his own flavour. It’s hard to choose one with such a Fashion-Com series.
3. What inspired you about you about the certain looks you have created?
I tried to incorporate each of my favourite characters from the high fashion of Vanessa Williams (Wilhelmina Slater) to the real girl next door, America Ferrera (Betty Suarez).
4. What looks/outfits stood out for you the best?
I loved the puchy orange Kaftan that’s available in selected Edgars stores (Melrose Arch, Menlyn, Sandton and Rosebank).
5. Where can consumers find these looks?
You can find these looks on Spree.co.za or selected Edgars stores (Melrose Arch, Menlyn, Sandton and Rosebank) and various boutiques in SA.
6. Apart from Ugly Betty, is there anyone else in the series you would love to dress?
I would love to dress Victoria Beckham who appears in Season 2, she is always fashion forward and a true style icon.
7. How can someone use these looks you have created as part of their everyday wardrobe?
It all boils down to personal style. These looks are suggestions from me to you, but like the famous saying goes: Fashion is what you buy, style is what you do with it… so be unique.
