Since the release of Adele’s first music video off of her album 25, we have been racking our brains trying to figure out why Adele is using a flip phone in the video.
And we’re not alone, there is even a Twitter account dedicated to Adele’s flip phone in the video!

Finally, we have answers, and we really didn’t have to wait that long. Xavier Dolan, the director of “Hello”, explained in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times: “I never like filming modern phones or cars. They’re so implanted in our lives that when you see them in movies, you’re reminded you’re in reality.” He continued, “If you see an old phone or a Toyota in a movie, they’re anti-narrative, they take you out of the story. If I put an iPhone or a modern car in a movie it feels like I’m making a commercial.”
Touché. Hello really does have timeless sepia-like filter quality and let’s be real, if that sharp white screen of an iPhone did make an appearance, it would have stood out like a sore thumb and ruined the ambiance. Yes? Yes.
