Fashion is a crucial element in movies. How can we forget Marilyn Monroe’s white dress moment from the movie The Seven Year Itch? Or the whimsical and preppy 90s trend that teen movie Clueless brought up? For years, fashion has being making statements in the film industry; here are three recent flicks that have made statements of their own:
Mad Max: Fury Road
This is grunge and eclectic fashion at its best! On one hand you have a lot of leather mixed with belts, scarves and neckpieces, all within a black-grey-olive palette. On the other hand, as shown by the “five wives” in the movie, there’s also a minimalistic, fragile look that’s achieved with draping and the colour white. Though contrasts, the two different trends complement each other. Get the look by pairing a faded leather jacket with ripped denims and a white cropped tee.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E
This remake screams 60s glam. And whether you love Elizabeth Debicki’s over-glam high fashion looks or Alicia Vikander’s retro fun style, there is definitely no shortage of eye-catching fashion statements to inspire you. To channel this movie’s fashion, look to graphic-print dresses, matching blazers and tons of gold and silver jewellery, or keep things minimal by simply putting on big stud earrings or hoops.
Dear White People
The movie that made a splash at the Sundance Film Festival is known for causing quite a stir for its racial satire. What we noticed, though, is the easy-going fashion, specifically that of Tessa Thompson, who plays the protagonist of the movie. Think subtle vintage-inspired looks with layered textures and minimal, intricate accessories. A beige leather skirt styled with a black shirt, a midi-ring set and a gold chain would be the perfect ensemble inspired by the film. While you are at it, add a fedora!
