Techno-fashion was the theme of this year’s Met Gala (Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, to be exact) – and like each year before it, we waited with bated breath to see how some of our favourite stars interpreted the theme. While most dazzled, and others failed, there’s no denying that a lot was happening on the red carpet. Here are 8 things you need to know about the Met Gala 2016:
1. Beyoncé’s one-woman show
With the stench of cheating rumours filling the air – and the release of Queen B’s latest album, Lemonade, fuelling those rumours – it was quite telling that Beyoncé rocked up without her beau, Jay Z in tow.
2. Gigi and Zayn made their red carpet debut
Looking like a robo-couple, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik stylishly stepped on to the red carpet as a couple for the first time.
3. Kylie Cracked a Nod
The youngest of the Kardashian/Jenner clan attended her first Met Gala, making quite the bang in a stunning Balmain number.
4. Metallic was the Memo…
To keep to the tech-theme of the gala, many stars went the futuristic way, which mostly involved metallic, and structured silhouettes.
5. …as was drama
Those who shied away from metal opted for standout pieces, notably Zoe Saldana and Rita Ora who went for feathery femininity. We love!
6. A bright idea
It’s hard not to love the Cinderella-esque gown that actress Claire Danes donnes, especially since it glowed in the dark. Literally. Thumbs up to designer Zac Posen.
7. Hairstyle evolutions
We all know that Taylor Swift’s got a new ‘do, but she wasn’t the only one who showed up with fresh locks. Emma Stone changed lanes and came as a brunette, while Lupita Nyong’o channelled her artistic side with a rather bold up-do giving Katy Perry’s beehive a run for its money.
8. The Guys Made a Statement, Too
Kanye West shocked with blue contact lenses that he called “vibes”, while Jaden Smith looked dapper in a minimal monochrome suit. A handful of actors, including Jared Leto and Idris Elba, arrived looking suave in formal tuxedos. *Swoon.
