SOLANGE: WHY THE LIME-THROWING MATTERS

$

Street Style - Day 3 - New York Fashion Week: Women's Fall/Winter 2016

It started as an exciting family outing: Solange Knowles, her husband Daniel, 32, their 11-year-old son Daniel Jr and one of his friends went to a Kraftwerk concert in New Orleans. As fans of the German electro-pop outfit in their youth, Solange and Daniel wanted to introduce their son to a band they believe had a major influence on hip-hop.

But while the family were dancing along to the music – not, one would think, an outrageous idea at an electro-pop concert – a group of white women in the box behind them started shouting at them to sit down. When their peremptory orders were ignored, one of the women threw a half-eaten lime at them, hitting Solange.

After confronting the women, Solange, 30, shared the story on Twitter, adding “I’m just going to share my experience… so that maybe someone will understand why many of us don’t feel safe in many white spaces. We don’t ‘Bring the drama’. Fix yourselves.”

When Twitter haters tried to make it her fault for refusing to sit down, or dismiss her for “playing the race card” – and those were among the least trollish responses – Solange refused to be silenced by the inevitable pile-on. Instead, she penned a moving account in a longer, more nuanced form than Twitter can handle, and published it on the Saint Heron website (Saintheron.com).

In the piece, Solange explains how racist “othering” can be achieved without using obvious racist language. “The tone,” she writes. “It’s the same one that says to your friend, ‘/Boy/, go over there and hand me my bag,’ at the airport, assuming he’s a porter. It’s the same one that tells you, “Ma’am, go into that other line over there,’ when you are checking in at the airport at the first class counter, before you even open your mouth.”

It’s a powerful article explaining how all people of colour in the US, whether they are black, brown or native American, often feel marginalised and belittled in predominantly white environments. It’s just a pity that the people who most need to read it – bile-spewing white supremacists on social media – probably won’t.

I was a Solangel (is that the right term?) before I joined the Beyhive. Solange has long been my creative muse – I love her style and sensibilities) and it’s wonderful to see how much she’s grown as a musical artist. I was incredibly jealous when my friend Malibongwe Tyilo got to crash her video shoot for Losing You in Langa a few years ago.

Here are my favourite tracks from her…

  1. Losing You
  2. Cranes in the Sky
  3. Lost on the Way home (with Chromeo)
  4. I decided Part 2
  5. Cosmic Journey feat Bilal

Which one is yours? Tweet @misszan and @GRAZIASAmag and let us know!

And if you still haven’t seen the amazing video for Cranes in the Sky…

We had the wonderful opportunity to meet up with Matthew, Juliet and Ben from South African electronic band GoodLuck. Their new single Find Me In The Forest is a lead-up track to the launch of their 3rd album The Nature Within due to be released today!

This is what they had to share:

Q: You guys have been around for quite some time now, what was the inspiration behind starting the band and how did it all begin?

Ben: It began after I had booked a gig, Jules and I were in another band making acoustic pop music and basically I had always wanted to make electronic music so we booked a gig due two weeks away without any music or any knowledge on how to produce electronic music. (We’ve always just kinda winged our stuff as we went along and it’s worked out for us) SO from that very first gig (Which was terrible BTW) we just kept going and going.

Q: What are the biggest or your favourite perks that come with doing what you do?

Matthew: Travelling the world, getting to see beautiful places, meeting beautiful people and getting paid to do that, also getting to experience the different scales of staying in all these cool, random and weird places. You just never know what to expect.

Julez:  Definitely travelling and getting toTry out all the different exotic foods, the different places we stay- sometimes we get to a place and it’s like “OMG, Is this us”- You just get to experience so many things

Ben: I think it’s very cool to see how different cultures work in different societies, like you get to see how different people respond to modern society and it gives this incredible overview of how humanity can live together and work together. You definitely get to learn what to do and what not to do.

Q: Your favourite performance to date?

Matthew: Mine isn’t always the biggest but if I must be honest, I would think that the residency that we have in Plett. It’s just a good family vibe. Everybody is there to just have fun.

Jules:  For me, it definitely has to be our first performance in Holland which was actually our first trip overseas, nobody knew our music and we were just barely breaking through in SA. We played a little festival for about 2000 people in the woods after the headliner – naturally, we thought everybody was going to leave but they stayed. At the end of the show, they were singing our songs back to us. It was so crazy because we knew they’d never heard our music before.

Ben: For me, it was the concert that we played in London at the Battersea PowerStation. There were about 25 000 people- we were under the impression that the crowd would not receive us well but they went wild! It was the best show ever.

Q: What inspired “The Nature Within”?

Jules: The album was made all over the world, recorded and written in 16 different countries ranging from India to Seychelles to Norway. There’s also some African influence from countries like Zambia. What’s different about this album is that we’ve always been inspired by nature but basically, this album is more about feeling and human nature and stories we can tell about the human experience.

Q: Following the year-long journey it took to create this album, what is next for Goodluck? Back to the studio or taking a break?

Ben: Basically our current efforts are strictly for South Africa and then at a later stage we’ll have a bigger focus on an international scale so there are no breaks right now. Hopefully in February. One of the hardest things as a musician is that you have to force yourself to take some time off.

Q: Who is your fashion inspiration?

Matthew: I tend to look at what’s currently trending. Nobody really knows this but I have a lot of Great Gatsby inspired blazers in my cupboard so some random Fridays I just rock out wearing a full on 1920’s inspired suit.

Julez: Vanessa Hudgens’ bohemian style and light, easy things to move around in when on stage.

Ben: For a while, definitely a Durban surfer type of influence. I was mostly in slops and board shorts but now I’ve found a little inspiration from Matthew’s enthusiasm for fashion.

We can’t wait to get our hand on GoodLuck’s latest offering. Get your copy out on shelves today!

AZEALIA BANKS AND RUSSELL CROWE FIGHT?

In shocking news, it seems something big has happened between Russell Crowe and Azealia Banks. The rapper apparently posted on social media about how Russell called used racial slurs on her and choked her. She has since deleted that post, only to post a few hours later that she’s had one of the hardest nights she’s had in a long time. There are two sides to every story and apparently witnesses to TMZ that Azealia seemed to spark the altercation when she threatened one of the guests and had to be escourted from the hotel suite at a Beverly Hills Hotel where Russell was hosting a dinner party.

We’ll definitely keep our eye on this one…

ROB AND CHYNA TAKE A PATERNITY TEST

The rumour mill sure knows how to rub celebs up the wrong way sometimes! After repeatedly hearing about how Rob Kardashian is not the father of her baby, Black Chyna decided to put the rumours to rest by taking a paternity test on the season finale of Rob & Chyna.

The couple managed to successfully dispel the rumours and prove that Rob really is the father to Black Chyna’s baby girl! There was still a b it of uncertainty about the couple’s future together… Eish.

NEW SOUND FROM RIKY RICK?

Riky Rick has become so comfortable in his skin and in doing what he loves that his next challenge is to create a new sound! King Kotini says that’s his goal for 2017 so fans must be ready for that change. I don’t think we should be worried here, this guy has had a great musical career so far, we assume it can only get better!

As first ladies come, Michelle Obama is probably the most relatable and stylish one that the U.S has had the pleasure of having, ever. Over the years, she has definitely won the hearts of many Americans and non- American citizens a like. Whether it’s her fashion style, her inspirational words or just her ability to connect with the man on the street, Michelle has become a fan favourite. She even has people wondering when will she be running for president!

(Image:Instagram)

(Image:Instagram)

With the Obama term coming to an end, we decided to list five of our favourite FLOTUS quotes.

Check them out:

  • One of the lessons that I grew up with was to always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody else says distract you from your goals.
  • When I get up and work out, I’m working out just as much for my girls as I am for me, because I want them to see a mother who loves them dearly, who invests in them, but who also invests in herself. It’s just as much about letting them know as young women that it is okay to put yourself a little higher on your priority list.
  • And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values like you work hard for what you want in life. That your word is your bond; that you do what you say you’re going to do. That you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them and even if you don’t agree with them.
  • You may not always have a comfortable life and you will not always be able to solve all of the world’s problems at once but don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have because history has shown us that courage can be contagious and hope can take on a life of its own.
  • Whether you come from a council estate or a country estate, your success will be determined by your own confidence and fortitude.

TURNING THE TABLES: ALPHA WOMEN AND BETA MEN

“In the age of overshare, Beyoncé Knowles exists as an anomaly. Ever since she took full control of her brand three years ago, she’s raised herself to the status of music icon- almost without uttering a single word in public and delighting us with two secret albums in the process…

… As the richest celebrity couple on the planet, at last count, Bey and Jay’s combined net worth totalled over $1 billion dollars (more than R13.7 billion). At the moment, $610 million (R8.4 billion)  of that belongs to Jay, with Bey following closely behind at $419 million  (R5.7 billion)– not including sales of Lemonade, which has earned the Queen B a cool $1.5 million (R20 million) this year alone. Ticket sales from her Formation world tour are estimated to gross $260 million (R3.5 billion). And last year, according to Forbes, Bey out-earned Jay – bringing in $54 million (R743 million) to his $53.5 million (RR734 million)”

In issue 233 of Grazia, we highlighted on the success that Beyoncé Knowles has accomplished as a businesswoman but more so how running her empire has little if anything to do with her husband.

There has always been a general perception and ideal that a woman earning more than her spouse can be somewhat devastating to that relationship. In today’s age, as gender roles seem to be changing, the idea of women out-earning their better halves isn’t that far-fetched nor as shocking as what it would be deemed many years ago. Unfortunately, not all men are comfortable with the notion of women as the primary breadwinner, for many men, it can feel like a slap in the face, emasculating. In today’s society, there is still that stereotypical association that being a man means being the ‘provider’ and providing is automatically associated with ‘true manliness’.

If you aren’t earning a living for your family, how can you be a ‘true’ man? And what are you supposed to do with yourself if your identity isn’t necessarily wrapped up in earning more than your spouse?

Women like Beyoncé Knowles, Tasha McCauley, Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey stand out from the rest of the crowd as they break such stereotypes and in a big way too.

Not all relationships that have the woman as the breadwinner result in failure but most do.

What are your thoughts on this subject?

GETTING TO KNOW ALEXANDRA MAY

$

Child actor all grown up, last month 18 year old Alexandra May dropped her debut EP filled with irresistible pop gems. Here she tells Grazia about the thrill of performing and finding someone amazing to love.

20160401-ally-may-credit-kat-grudko

1. What were you like as a kid?

I grew up on a plot with lots of trees and animals. My sister and I built tree-houses and forts as girls, and I loved playing with our toys amongst the rocks and pond.   But I’ve always been a real girl’s girl and loved clothes and dressing up too.

2. When did your love of performing first begin?

I started singing lessons when I was seven years old and did competitions as soon as my teacher told me I was ready. The first time I performed on stage, I did a ballet routine in a tutu when I was a tiny tot! I guess my love for performing started as soon as I stepped onto stage for the first time. But the process of gaining confidence and becoming more skilled made the love REAL.

3. How would you describe your sound?

My sound is pop! I’m influenced by retro as well as modern sounds.

4. Is your first single ‘Amazing’ inspired by personal experience?

I do relate to the lyrics. There’s always a story! When AMAZING started to come to life, I loved the song! I t was perfect that ‘Alexandra May’ with a hashtag #aMAYzing would release a song called AMAZING! It just worked. But time passed and during the time I actually recorded the song I was pulling myself out of a toxic relationship, so the song didn’t sit well and it was very hard to be enthusiastic about it. But just before AMAZING was released, a guy from my past came back into my life and turned my world right-side-up.   He gave me hope again! We’re good friends, in fact best friends. Now I sing the song with the hope that, one day I will find somebody that’s “So Damn Amazing!”

5. How did it feel to step into the recording studio for the first time?

I will never forget it! I was mentored by Alice ‘SHY’ Gilham from the age of 15 and she booked me into Milestone Studios in Cape Town to record music. It was incredible! I was shaking and my heart pounded.   You could probably pick the sound up in the mic! It was the most amazing feeling to stand there singing and doing what I’d only seen in the movies and on Youtube.

6. What do you love most about performing?

The thing I love most about performing is being with the crowd. I love feeding off their energy.   In fact the thing I have to control is my own excitement.

7. What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?

I’ve received so many gems of advice from amazing people. One that stands out which I received when I was eight years old and was from my first drama coach Jill Avis. She said “You’re not a performer until you’ve made your audience feel something.” And I’ve lived by that since day one!

AN UPDATE ON THE BRANGELINA CASE

Proving that the battle will continue till no end, the Brangelina divorce is still on-going, this time changing focus to the children’s custody.

As a response to Angelina Jolie’s divorce claim, where she stated that she seeks sole custody of the children, Brad Pitt has sent out his first court filing.

This update makes it clear that the divorce is all about gaining custody of their six children and calls to question all the rumours that have been circulating:

Did he verbally or physically abuse their eldest son, Maddox during an argument with Angelina? Was Brad’s behaviour so troubling that it can cause a 12-year relationship to break? Are drugs and alcohol to blame for his behaviour?

Stay tuned to find out more deets.

GABRIELLE UNION SPEAKS OUT AGAINST BET

All roads leading up to the #BeingMaryJane finale this TUES at 10P/9C!

A photo posted by #BeingMaryJane (@betmaryjane) on

The fourth season of popular BET show Being Mary Jane is coming, and though we are mighty excited, it seems there is some negativity surrounding the new season.

The lead star of the show, Gabrielle Union is suing the channel for breach of her contract. According to the 44-year-old actress, BET has combined the upcoming fourth and fifth seasons of the show as a way of avoiding paying Gabrielle her contractual raise for Season 5.

The star spoke out about the lawsuit on an episode of Bravo’s What What Happens Live after being asked whether filming of the show will be put on hold:

“No, I’m a pro and we all go to work, and Season 4 will air January 10 on BET,” Gabrielle replied. “And hopefully in the meantime, we can sort out some business that’s fair and reasonable and equitable to not just me, but our whole cast and our writers and our crew.”

She then continued to add her opinion about women’s pay in the industry, “I put in the same hours as most men and if not more. And I deserve to get paid the same. Equal pay, equal work. And that’s how it should be. And if you stand up for nothing, you’ll fall for anything.”

Well, as women we stand behind you!

 PRINCE HARRY RELEASES A STATEMENT

After much talk about whether or whether not Prince Harry is dating Suits actress Meghan Markle, the Prince has finally confirmed it. In a statement released today the Prince Harry’s Secretary f Communications, the relationship status is revealed and the media outbursts and abuse is addressed:

“Since he was young, Prince Harry has been very aware of the warmth that has been extended to him by members of the public. He feels lucky to have so many people supporting him and knows what a fortunate and privileged life he leads.

He is also aware that there is significant curiosity about his private life. He has never been comfortable with this, but he has tried to develop a thick skin about the level of media interest that comes with it. He has rarely taken formal action on the very regular publication of fictional stories that are written about him and he has worked hard to develop a professional relationship with the media, focused on his work and the issues he cares about.

But the past week has seen a line crossed. His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments. Some of it has been hidden from the public – the nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life.

Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.

He has asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done. He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”

You spent many years in New York – has this affected the style of your work?

Absolutely. It was my home for 13 years and that gritty aesthetic of graffiti and posters plastered onto walls over one another has definitely filtered into the work, giving it a layered effect. And while it’s very much a reference to that time and that city, this collage of surfaces is also not unlike life – that idea that we’re made up of layers, mistakes, experiences – that we can never really fully remove the residue of the past, even if you peel off layers there’s always something left behind.

How would you describe your style?

I’ve got no formal training – so my style is very much one of winging it, being experimental. But in some way or another, I’ve been ‘making art’ forever – through various channels. My home, Instagram, photography… I consider these all extensions of my art. As far as this collection of work goes, I’ve use mixed media, and it’s really just a physical manifestation of my life and what goes on in my head – it’s messy and disorganised. I’m also a huge hoarder and the work documents or uses things I’ve picked up and kept over the years, so in that way, it’s also a bit autobiographical.

What does the process of art making entail for you?

It’s a slow one. Using glue and paint means leaving it to dry in between layers. This has an interesting side-effect as well, in that sometimes I come back after having had a break and don’t like something I’ve done and change it entirely – at the end you like some of the works and really don’t like others.

Would you agree that there are elements of Jean-Michel Basquiat in the mark-making?

I knew Jean briefly while I lived in New York, and was a big fan of his work. There are definitely parallels between the styles. He could draw of course, and I can’t, but his more abstract work definitely. I’ve also been reading about him and his methods recently and was inspired to go and get an oil stick to try – which might also be a reason there’s a likeness. It’s funny, at the time I had no idea what direction my career would take or I’d probably have made a point of watching him much more closely.

A lot of the images used in the works are photographs of you… is this in reference to your modeling days?

I found a whole bunch of Polaroids my first husband Pierre had taken many years ago when I was much younger, and I liked them, so they found their way into the works. And although they document my days in fashion, they’re more about my life than my career as a model – with that being a part of my life. I’m 53, I have a lot of history behind me…

5 MINUTES WITH JIMMY NEVIS

We had a quick chat about grooming with Jimmy Nevis, who we hope can give you a few tips to pass onto bae.

Nevis is an alternative pop singer, songwriter and producer, born and raised in the beautiful Cape. He has shared the stage with top musicians in the South African industry such as Mi Casa, Pascal & Pearce and you might know him from his number of hit singles – Heartboxing, Balloon, All About It and Misscato.

Here’s the inside scoop directly from Jimmy Nevis to you…

It’s no secret that you are a very busy man – Are there any tips you can give as to how you manage to find the time to stay well-groomed and healthy?

Waking up early and having two of each when it comes to essentials. I have a travel bag for short trips which has its own shaver, cologne and own set of moisturisers in it. I also keep cologne and moisturisers in my car – to make sure I always look and smell on point.

Does grooming play an important role in your day-to-day life?

Yes, I use an electronic hair shaver every week and trim my beard daily. I also make sure to moisturise as much as possible. Especially for when I’m attending business meetings or performances, I like to look the way I feel.

Do you have a strict grooming routine or do you change it up every once in a while?

I always change it up now and then. I like to try new products but I do keep the essentials at a close hand. For example, I have sensitive skin on my neck, so I trim and shave the night before so that the skin can heal and breath for the next day – it just looks smoother and better!

What’s your go-to brand when it comes to fragrances?

I enjoy any Chanel Cologne or Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue.

How did you discover your love for music?

The church was a big influence. I’ve always loved singing and performing- it set me free and allowed me to discover the best parts of me. I think most people feel that way about finding their passion and mine is music.

Describe a life without music.

It wouldn’t be any life at all – in fact, all life’s greatest moments would feel incomplete without it.

Describe your style in no more than 3 words?

Risky. Fashion Forward. Symbolic.
