Sun’s out, fun’s out. Or, at least, we think that’s how the saying goes… Whatever your excuse, you’re going to need a killer soundtrack for the holiday season. And we’ve got you sorted with 10 of our current faves. You’re welcome.
Petite Noir, Chess
Yannick Illunga has made the move from SA to the UK, and his world domination is imminent, if this single from is upcoming EP, The King Of Anxiety, is any indication. Post-punk meets electronica meets our happy ears.
Taylor Swift, Blank Space
There’s a reason why she’s the only artist to have gone platinum this year. Miss Swift makes incredibly catchy pop songs that get stuck in your head for days. Exhibit A: her slightly obsessive ode to new love. She’s not really singing about lonely Starbucks lovers, but that’s okay.
Charlie XCX, Gold Coins
Glitchy, synth-filled beats and Charlie’s sultry vocals combine to form the ultimate ear worm. Wind the window down, turn this up and head to the beach or rooftop party nearest you. This is best paired with an umbrella-and-tropical fruit-filled beverage on arrival.
FKA Twigs, Pendulum
R-Patz’s other half has pretty much been on a constant rotation on our playlists this year. But this dreamy single from LP1, which Twigs confesses is her favourite too, is perfect for those times you need to chill.
Beyonce, 7/11
A party anthem guaranteed to get everyone on the floor, Queen Bey’s first and only banger of the year was most definitely worth the wait. Red cups at the ready? Arms raised, start spinning!
Mark Ronson feat Bruno Mars, Uptown Funk
It’s been a while since we’ve heard from mega producer Mark Ronson. Back with a bang and taking us right back to the old school, his first funk-filled single boasts vocals from none other than Bruno Mars. And we like.
Marina And The Diamonds, Froot
Her spelling skills may be questionable, but her summer jam making ability is not. A little bit 80s 8 bit synth, a little bit 90s electronica, Marina’s latest single signals good things to come from the Brit pop princess.
The Kiffness feat Shortstraw, Find A Way
You’re bound to run into Cape Town’s fun-loving electronica duo and Joburg’s equally fun-loving indie rockers, Shortstraw, somewhere along the coast this summer on tour. Together, they’ve made musical magic together with this track.
Gwen Stefani, Spark The Fire
Our official Queen of Pop is back. Better than that, she’s reteamed with her good buddy, Pharrell Williams, for this catchy-as-hell girl power anthem. One that will have you singing along in no time.
Azealia Banks, Chasing Time
It’s been a long time coming (three years, in fact), but one of rap’s most controversial stars has finally found her way out of the recording studio and into our ears with the release of her debut album, Broke With Expensive Taste. The first single is still the best.
