Thando Thabethe

5FM radio DJ Thando Thabete was making waves this week for all the right reasons. The 25-year-old started an effective social media campaign – #MakeItStop  – for Women’s Month to shed light and take a stand against women abuse (Make sure to get this week’s issue to read more about this and Thando’s personal  experience of domestic violence.)

In conjunction with her social media campaign, Thando launched the Thando Thabete Women’s Day Netball Challenge. Last year, the event, now in its second year, attracted over 400 people and raised more than R20 000 for the Bethany Home for Abused Women.

Thando experienced domestic violence growing up and the recent increase in statistics in South Africa motivated Thando to take it upon herself to encourage women to take back their power.

‘’We need to encourage women around us to be strong enough within themselves to stand up against abuse. This event aims to allow women to feel powerful and to not feel less of a human being because of emotional and physical abuse. I would like every woman to find their power and inspire change in their communities. The Thando Thabethe Netball Challenge is a celebration of women and their power,” Thando expressed.

Thando, we applaud you for being brave enough to share your personal story and turn it into something good to help other women.
