THE BURNING MAN INSTAGRAMS THAT GAVE US MAJOR FOMO

Around  70,000 people converged on the temporary city in the middle of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert for this year’s BURNING MAN festival. For those of oyu who didn’t know, here’s a little background history about one of the world’s most-loved festivals….

“The event is described as an experiment in community and art, influenced by 10 main principles, including “radical inclusion” and community cooperation, “radical self-expression”, “radical self-reliance”, gifting and decommodification, and leaving no trace. First held in 1986 on Baker Beachin San Francisco as a small function organized by Larry Harvey and a group of friends, it has since been held annually, spanning from the last Monday in August to the first Monday in September (Labor Day).

Burning Man plays host to various forms of artistic expression created for the event by its attendees and others, including experimental and interactive pieces, performance, and art cars among other mediums, often adhering to a yearly theme chosen by organizers. The event takes its name from its culmination, the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy (“the Man”) that traditionally occurs on the Saturday evening of the event”. [wikipedia]

“One of the most powerful art pieces at Burning Man this year: the sculpture of two adults fighting, backs to one another…yet the inner child in them both just wants to connect and love one another. Age has so many beautiful gifts, but one that I could live without is the pride and resentment we hold onto when we are in conflict with others. The forgiving, open and free spirit of children IS OUR TRUE NATURE; and I know I’ll be remembering this next time I’m feeling stubborn” (instagram.com/alexipanos)

Make Love Not War, a one day festival taking place at The Grand Café and Beach in Granger Bay, celebrates the 70s, 80s and 90s through designer fashion and food.

Make Love Not War is a series of one-day festivals taking place at ‘Grand Africa – Beach’, V & A Waterfront – launching on the 24th of September 2015.

In the wake of trending daytime festivals and a resurgence of Bohemianism, Make Love Not War digs classic 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s tunes out of the crates and celebrates these decades of undeniably good music through boho-chic fashion and sexy beach food. The festival is set on a private beach, which forms part of Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront and looks out onto Table Bay. ‘Grand Africa – Beach’ is where beach culture meets eclectic décor with oversize chandeliers, antique Indian rugs and large entrances that lead out onto the wooden deck and Atlantic Ocean – creating the perfect playground for Make Love Not War which encourages barefoot bohemianism.

A selection of Cape Town’s top fashion and décor brands have been invited to sell their collections in Make Love Not War’s hippie market where vibrant kaftans, crocheted bikinis or quilted throws and scatter cushions can be bought – also giving festivalgoers the opportunity to interact directly with these designers. Key male and female fashion brands participating include Dreamland, LISP, MESO, Agh Ja Clothing, Gabriela Fraser Designs, Babette and Magents as well as accessory designers Black Betty, Matter of Fakt and Kata Jewellery. Décor includes funky wall installations from MIYU Homeware, handmade linen from Oh So Boho and Native American dream catchers from Passion Weaver. Alongside this boho fashion and beach-chic food will be tarrot readings, Ayurvedicmassage and numerology as well as fine art and glassblowing.

The 60’s to the 90s were times of great experimentation, liberal idealism and the embracing of counter cultures. Make Love Not War intends to draw on the free-spiritedness of each festivalgoer. The festival series launches on the 24th of September 2015, with events on the 16th of December 2015 and the 20th of March 2016 to follow. These events start at 14h00 and tickets, costing R200 each, are available from Nutickets: http://afterhours.nutickets.co.za/MLNW or at the door of the event. FACEBOOK HAS A BRAND NEW FEATURE

dislike button

After years of denying all Facebookers an alternative option to “like”, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed yesterday in a Q&A session that the company has been working on a “dislike” button feature.

“I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years,” Zuckerberg said. “Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it.”

Exactly what the “dislike” button will entail is still a mystery but Zuckerberg explained:  “What users really want is the ability to express empathy, as not every moment is a good moment.”

Zuckerberg had initially refused to include a “dislike” button because he was concerned that it would invite negativity, which he further expressed by saying, “That isn’t what we’re here to build in the world.”

further expressing that he did not want it to be a mechanism with which people could “down vote” others’ posts.

Instead, it will be for times when clicking “like” on “sad” posts felt insensitive.

Brace yourself folks, you might be getting more “dislikes” on certain posts/pictures/selfies than “likes”.

If you’ve ever watched an episode of KUWTK (or even an episode of Khloé & Lamar), you will be familiar with the cookie jar and its perfect (in every sense of the word) arrangement in Koko’s house. And let’s be honest, if you’re like us you’ve asked yourself the questions: “How on earth does she do that!? How long does this task take? How often does she have to do this? How many boxes of cookies does she use? If she takes a cookie, does she replace it with another one?”

Well, Koko has heard our thoughts and is finally giving us her KhlO-C-D (the title of her new segment) answer.

In a video posted on her newly launched website and app earlier this week, the 31-year-old reality TV star gives the world the step-by-step method to her self-proclaimed madness.

Just like those salads and huge iced-tea drinks they’re always drinking and eating on the show, Khloé is finally giving us an answer to the question that was driving us crazy, have a look here:

WHO IS REPLACING ZOOEY DESCHENAL ON NEW GIRL?

(Image: Instagram/The_Native_Tiger)

Megan Fox is your new ‘New Girl’. In a new move that caught us completely off guard, news broke over the weekend that Megan Fox will be temporarily replacing Zooey Deschanel on the fifth season of New Girl while Zooey takes some well-deserved maternity leave.

The story line is reported to go along the line of new girl Reagan (Megan Fox) a pharmaceutical rep who sublets Jess’ room while she is out on jury duty.

TBH, we’re happy with this move-Fox deserves more airtime to show off her talents and skills, and for anyone show’s seen This is 40, you’ll know what we’re talking about-the girl has comedic talent. And it seems New Girl creator, Liz Meriwether agrees, saying: “We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part – she’s the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up.”

Apparently, Fox’s character will be introduced to us in episode six which is reported to focus on the shortest roommate interview process of all time-we can’t imagine why. But we can imagine the reactions from our favourite guy’s Nick, Schmidt, Winston and Coach. Cue tummy aching laughter.

We all know that when it comes to enviable Instagram pics, we can console ourselves with the fact that the majority of the pics are: perfectly timed, faultlessly lit and/or edited beyond the standard Instagram filters.

But besides the editing, how “natural” could the set up really be? Thai photographer, Chompoo Baritone, answers our question in a photo series that proves that the majority of the pics you see on your feed are based on the motto, “Fake it till you make it.”

It is not often that we find ourselves saying we want to be BFFs with Kylie Jenner – until now that is. The 18-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians star surprised her best friend, Jordyn Woods, with a flashy new car (a Mercedez-Benz Ontario) for her 18th birthday on Wednesday.

Both Kylie and Jordyn took to Instagram to share a snap of the new ride.

Meanwhile, Kylie has been getting flack for reportedly getting BFF Jordyn another gift: a birthday with the N-word written on it.

The new queen of social media (sorry, Kimmy) quickly took to Twitter to slam the rumours and posted a pic of a cake that had a more “home-made” feel to it. TBH, we’re not buying it – the original cake seems more Kardashian/Jenner style. Home-made is not something we associate with the KUWK klan…

If you have ever wanted to know what perfection sounded like, it would be a duet between Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé performing her hit single Drunk In Love.

Held at Central Park in NYC, the duo took to the stage during Bey’s set at the Global Citizen Festival – an event which aims to bring awareness to social issues with the help of high-profile speakers and performers.

While this isn’t the first time the pair have performed together (remember their performance for the Stevie Wonder tribute back in Feb), this version of Drunk In Love definitely wins in our books.

Sadly, we all know about the Zendaya and Guiliana Rancic “pitchouli oil” saga after Zendaya showed up at this year’s Oscars sporting gorgeous dreadlocks in an attempt to make a statement “to remind people of colour that our hair is good enough”.

Well Zendaya, Barbie heard your statement, saw the beauty in your natural hair endeavours and raised you an Oscars look-alike Barbie, complete with dreads.

On the red carpet of the Barbie Rock ‘n Royals Concert Experience (a benefit for VH1’s Save the Music Foundation), which Zendaya hosted on Saturday at the Hollywood Palladium, Zendaya proudly showed off her very own doppelgänger Barbie.

zendaya 1

“I’m excited to be part of the new direction the Barbie brand is headed, specifically with how they are celebrating diversity and encouraging kids to raise their voices,” Zendaya said about the Zendaya Barbie. “It’s a positive message to send to my fans, including my nieces, who are coming with me to the concert.”

That “new direction” Zendaya is referring to is the Barbie Fashionista line of 23 new dolls featuring eight skin tones, 14 sculpts,  18 eye colours and 23 different hair colours.

Though the Zendaya doll is not included in this line – she’s a one-of-a-kind creation – it smells like success to us.

REVEALED: THE REAL REASON BEHIND KALEY AND RYAN’S DIVORCE

(Image: Instagram/KaleyCuoco)

News broke over the weekend that one of our favourite funny girls, BBT star Kaley Cuoco and husband Ryan Sweeting were filing for divorce after only 21 months.

While our hearts were a little broken, it didn’t come as a complete shock because, you know, it’s Hollywood. Also, despite continuously denying divorce rumours, a source revealed that the couple seemed miserable before the divorce as well as during romantic date nights.

But yesterday, Kaley was seen out and about, buying horses and smiling from ear to ear like nothing had happened; this wasn’t putting on a brave face, this was freedom. And that’s when the can of worms opened – and the truth started spilling out.

Apparently, there were various reasons for the divorce but two concerning ones stick out: married too soon and another woman.

There was trouble with the marriage from the very beginning and both of them seemed miserable. Kaley reportedly wanted to be in a real relationship, have a big wedding and a baby but rushed into a marriage with the wrong person; essentially she fell in love with the idea of being married to him.

To add fuel to the already miserable fire, there was another woman involved: Ryan’s ex-girlfriend. Ryan liked to call his ex-girlfriend every evening to recap the day’s big events to her and to ask her for advice – instead of asking his wife. Naturally and understandably, Kaley wasn’t too happy about this.

Soccer legend David Beckham and comedic star Kevin Hart have teamed up in an amazing new H&M comedy.

In the clip, Hart is preparing to play Becks in a new movie, and needs to shadow him for a week to really get into character – from joining him in his daily workout routine and watching how Becks lifts his tea cup to perfecting what Becks says and how he says it.

Beckham recently broke all our hearts when he shut down rumours he was branching into acting full time-putting a firm stop to the swirling rumours around any possible 007 films.

Well, we have this classic nugget of gold to hold onto with Becks, the actor:

A+E Networks has announced a multimedia partnership between entertainment channel brand Lifetime and 1st for Women Insurance for Four Weddings South Africa. It incorporates the elements that have made the Four Weddings format an international success but with an added local flavour.

If you’re not a reality TV junkie like us, then we need to break down why Four Weddings coming to SA is a super big deal.

It’s about four brides who agree to be guests at one another’s weddings and ultimately judge which is best. It’s a similar format to Come Dine with Me, but so much better!

Viewers can expect a unique range of cultural diversity, dynamic landscapes and delicious cuisine. From naked brides to biker brides, and from Zulu brides to Tswana brides, a broad spectrum of emotions, relationships and local traditions are brought to life as the series follows four brides as they attend each other’s special wedding day.

The winning bride, who scores the highest marks for dress, venue, food and overall experience, will go on an all-expenses-paid honeymoon of a lifetime.

Announcing the partnership, Anthea Petersen, Regional Director, Africa A+E Networks, said: “Lifetime is the entertainment destination for women in Africa with high-quality programming packed with powerful stories and passionate people. There are strong brand value synergies between Lifetime and 1st for Women, so I couldn’t think of a better partnership for Four Weddings SA, our first local commission for Lifetime in Africa.”

MilkyChanceLondon1_James Kendall

We can’t wait to see the German electro-folk duo (Clemens and Philipp) perform at Vodacom In The City in Jozi and Rocking The Daisies in Cape Town this weekend. Clemens tells Grazia about their first show, staying grounded and having a good time.

What are your earliest memories of music?

I used to go on holiday with my family to Sweden every year. When we were on the road, we’d listen to The Lighthouse Family and the Penguin Café Orchestra. I think I was about eight years-old.

How did you guys meet and when did you realise you’d like to make music together?

We met during our advanced music class in high school. The first day we hung out together, we formed our first band, but we never had any plans to pursue a music career like the one we have now. This happened almost by accident.

What did if feel like to play for an audience for the very first time?

We were lucky enough to have all our friend and family in the crowd, so it felt more like a casual jamming situation…

What are you most looking forward to about playing for South African crowds?

We just get on stage and try to play as good as we can, no matter where we are, whether that’s in Germany, California or in South Africa.

How much has your lives changed since your track Stolen Dance blew up last year?

Some things have definitely changed in our lives as musicians, but day to day we just try to stick to the lives we had before. We still have the same friends, we still live in the same city and we still enjoy seeing familiar faces and being in the same surroundings.

Is it true you recorded your first EP in your childhood bedroom?

We recorded Sadnecessary in my parents’ house where our band room used to be. We have a new band room now but it’s still very intimate. We plan to make the new record there too instead of some fancy professional studio.

PULLING BACK THE CURTAIN: BTS WITH SUPERBALIST 100 WINNER SUZELLE DIY

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 12.02.57 PM

I’m on set with the team behind YouTube sensation Suzelle DIY, who right now is busy braaing boerewors bagel dogs for their Heritage Day show. Spoiler alert! Suzelle DIY is not a real person, she’s a character played by Julia Anastasopoulos and while she’s out of character she’s just quickly using a Cadac gas cooker to speed up the braai process that’s being filmed on the Weber. Pull back the curtain far enough and you’ll see just how much goes into these two-minute webisodes. Once the boerewors bagel dogs are a golden brown Julia moves back to the Weber and her voice changes and her face becomes more expressive and by the time the director shouts ACTION! Julia has fully transformed into Suzelle.

“The boerewors bagel dogs are ready! I am so creative! I made this!”

Ari Kruger is the director and other half of Suzelle DIY. A filmmaker with a background in animation and visual effects, Ari has shot big-budget commercials, cool-guy music videos and award-winning short films, but it’s Suzelle who has won him the most eyeballs. And hearts.

“Braai stuff does really well,” says Ari, eating a piece of boerewors. “It speaks to the heart of every South African. Initially we didn’t set out to do that but when we noticed how successful it was, that people genuinely love things that are distinctly South African, we did more of it.”

Julia jumps in.

“The expats especially love it. We get emails from people in England and Oz all the time, ‘Oh Suzelle, we miss home, thank you so much.’  That’s cool.”

It’s a strategic move putting out a braai webisode around Heritage Day, as this helps to get traction for the videos, because even if you can’t tan a chop on 24 September, you can share a proudly South African braai-themed video on social media as the next best thing.

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 12.04.48 PM

It’s not a particularly new concept, these DIY type shows, and South Africa is spoiled for choice when it comes to the format. The Home Channel’s Die NuutsmanShow Me How and The Gardener all have varying levels of cringe, but what makes Suzelle DIY such a success is that the team behind it has done this on purpose in order to create a South African icon. Or as Suzelle would say, “I-kon.”

Cath and Kim, Ali G, David Brent… Suzelle is the South African answer to these anti-heroes that we can’t help but root for. And the reason why we feel empathy for such a tragic character is because of the actress playing Suzelle, Julia. With a BA in Theatre and Performance majoring in Acting at the University of Cape Town, the Dean’s Merit List student played Ophelia three years in a row and then worked stages across the country in a number of diverse roles, which included designing sets for theatre productions. And those hand-drawn illustrations on the walls and windows of a few MyCiti bus stations? Also Julia.

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 12.22.07 PM

“Julia is Suzelle DIY,” says Ari. “That’s how it came about. She’s actually really good at doing things. She’s inventive. The ‘getting the fluff off the jersey’ thing was an actual thing. She did that to me years ago, chasing me around the house getting fluff of my jersey, and that’s something we remembered and thought would be funny in a video.”

“And I invented the boerewors bagel dog!” laughs Julia, self-deprecatingly, speaking in Suzelle’s voice before switching to her own. “I’ve just always enjoyed making things. I’d rather make it than buy it.”

Screen Shot 2015-10-01 at 12.22.26 PM

The similarities between Julia and the character that she plays end with both of them being creative women. Where Suzelle is larger than life in her fashion and the way she interacts with people, Julia is quite reserved, quiet and somewhat shy. The DIY thing extends to the team producing the series though, and  there’s a lo-fi, shoestring, flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants feel. All of the gardening and braai episodes are shot here at Ari’s mom Glenda’s house.

“When we started we pulled in friends and family and shot on weekends,” says Julia. “Then we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny to have a dog?’ and pulled in Gina’s dog. (Gina is the actress who plays Marianne). Obviously a lot of thought has gone into this, but it’s also been very organic. It’s definitely evolved. When people responded to certain things, like the flowers in her hair, we picked up on that and now Suzelle always needs to have a flower in her hair.”

Because Gina isn’t on set today (she recently had a baby, congrats Gina!) the team is even smaller than usual. Natalia Segerman (her father found Sugarman, her sister is It-Girl Fani and her brother Rafi plays for the band John Wizards) is the third wheel and deals with admin and production. Otherwise Julia does her own make-up, wardrobe, styling, hair… and Ari shoots, directs and does the edit.

“We write everything together,” says Julia. “We’ll write a loose script and then a lot of the dialogue kind of happens on the day. A lot is improvised. We sort of develop it while we’re shooting it.”

To illustrate Julia’s point about how organic everything is and the improvisation that takes place, one of the scenes plays out like this:

Suzelle: “The bagel dogs are ready. Off you come little guy. Oh fok! Just jokes. Can’t say that. Because Checkers!”

Natalia: “What about the flags?”

Ari: “I feel there’s too much South Africa. We have the flag salad and the little flag in the bagel dogs.”

Glenda: “But that’s what you want.”

Suzelle: “I made this!”

Ari: “That’s Suzelle’s new line.”

Suzelle: “With my own creative knowledge.”

Ari: “Another one.”

Suzelle: “The bagel dogs are ready!”

Ari: “Cool. Cut.”

Glenda: “Nothing with Bakkies?”

Ari: “Not today, Mom.”

Suzelle: “Bakkies, don’t!”

Glenda: “Yes, I’m telling you!”

Suzelle: “The boerewors bagel dogs are ready! Bakkies don’t look at me like that. This is not for you.”

Ari: “Good idea, Mom.”

Julia: “Very good idea, Glen.”

Ari: “I think we should end with Suzelle singing.”

Natalia: “Zama zama ey ey… “

Ari: “The Coca-Cola one.”

Suzelle: “When I am older… when I am younger… nana na na na…”

There’s laughter throughout, real laughs and Suzelle’s stage laugh “ho-ho-ho”, which elicits more laughs, and there’s a light breeziness where everyone is able to contribute without fear of being rebuked or sounding silly or being ignored.

Julia admits that it can become a bit frustrating to keep doing the same line over and over, but that a lot of the time she’ll use this as an opportunity to develop the jokes and that, yes, Ari’s mom does tend to put her five cents in, things like, “Julia, open your eyes more.”

“I feel that we all know the character so well, and there’s a definite vocabulary that goes with Suzelle. So we all just chip in.” says Natalia.

“It’s quite fun to do it like that because everything else we do is so planned,” says Julia. “Story boarded. Scripted. Suzelle was originally a vehicle to generate material and build a character.”

In the same way that some of our most-loved skits and shorts have gone on to become feature films, there are bigger plans for Suzelle, too. Watch the webisodes and you’ll see that the shorts only chip at the veneer of what’s quite a complex character.

“The videos are still very much South African with South Africans watching them,” says Ari. “Where the movie could really transcend to an international audience. We want to take it to festivals and introduce Suzelle to the world.”

Julia tells us more about the character.

“Suzelle’s 32 years old, single, but would love to get married. She works at a guesthouse called Somerset Guest, which gives her plenty of time to look at magazines and get all her DIY ideas. She has a next-door neighbour called Hennie, a school kid who’s very into computers and cameras. He’s the one who films and uploads everything to YouTube.”

All this and more will be revealed in the movie, and there are so many things that they can’t do in the webisodes that they’ll unpack in a feature-length film. How Suzelle is so desperate for acceptance, for instance, and the movie will act as a sort of precursor to her YouTube success and fame.

“Right now we’re pretty close to a good outline,” says Ari. “We haven’t scripted yet but will know what direction it’ll take by the end of the year. Ninety minutes. Way more difficult. Totally different project. We’d need funding and in a totally different way from how we’re funding these.”

What started off as self-funded is now being sponsored. Today is Checkers’ turn, early in the week there was a video for Virgin Active and before that was Lasher Tools. It’s all pretty subtle though and the only branding you’ll see is at the end of the videos, when a slate screen comes up. Right now they’re in the enviable position where they get to pick and choose who to work with and Natalia’s inbox is being flooded with requests.

“We are getting approached every day now,” says Natalia. “Either to get product featured or brands to sponsor a video or a series. People also want to come onto the show. We do love to collaborate as those videos get a great reception. Where we have guests on the show. To see Suzelle interact with them, that dynamic, does so well.”

The boerewors bagel dogs are done, it’s a wrap, and time for lunch, which is, yep, you guessed it – boerewors bagel dogs! Julia is actually a vegetarian so she simply peels the pastry off of the boerewors and eats that with stuff from the plate of condiments. The “condom-mints”, as Suzelle would say, are laid out like the South African flag and because there’s no food that’s blue she’s used blue serviettes and blue plastic cutlery. So kreyatif!

Julia: “I’d do this again. It’s a bit labour intensive. Having to cook the wors first.”

Natalia: “But how often do you have leftover boerewors?”

Ari: “Always. I think it’s going to be a really good episode.”

Glenda: “When you finish will you guys just move the tables back. And remember to sweep.”

51-year-old Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock has reportedly adopted a baby girl.

After adopting son Louis (5) from New Orleans, it seems Sandra was keen to expand her family. It’s reported that Sandra’s current beau, photographer Bryan Randall, is one hundred percent supportive of Sandra’s decision to adopt and will be involved in caring for the child.

A source reveals that, “Sandra’s made it quite clear to Bryan from the start that she’s looking for a husband to raise kids with. [While she’s] had the paperwork ready to adopt another child, [she] really wanted to do it with the right man, and Bryan’s been checking every box so far.”

We’re sure Sandra wants stability and a family environment for her kids, but we also think that whether or not things work out between Sandra and Bryan (we really hope they do though, they make a great couple!) we know that Sandra is and will continue to be the greatest mom to her kids.

We can’t wait to find out more details about Sandy’s little girl.
