Kick off your summer with cheer at the Joburg Festival of Beer, which will be returning for the second year at Pirates Sports Club on Saturday 27^th and Sunday 28^th of September in Greenside, Johannesburg.

The two day festival, which has established itself in Cape Town as the largest Festival of Beer in the Southern Hemisphere, promises to be bigger and badder than ever before.  With up to 160 beers on show from local and international brewers, including some exciting new faces in the brewing industry, beer lovers will be spoilt for choice.

Apart from offering a wide variety of beers to sample, the festival will also have home brewing demonstrations, food and beer pairings, guided beer tours, a selection of delicious food stalls, great music and sport on TV screens. There will also be an exciting campaign dedicated to getting beer fit in the weeks leading up to the festival, as well as live from the event, ensuring both mental and physical preparation of all things beer!

Brewers exhibiting at the Joburg Festival of Beer 2014 include:

Brewhogs: Brewed by female brewmaster Apiwe Nxusani Brewhogs is based in Kyalami and produces 32 000 litres of natural and preservative free beer per month including a Red Lager and Pilsener.

Swagga: One of the new brewers on the block, Johannesburg-based brewers Swagga beer produce premium quality hand crafted beers such as their Swagga Porter, Red, Blonde and IPA.

Stellenbrau: Having just won the 2014 Global Craft Beer Award for best lager, Stellenbrau have shot into the global limelight for superb beer. The brewery, based in Stellenbosch, produces beers such as their Craven Craft Lager, Alumni Ale and Governors Red Lager.

Soweto Gold: Having opened in 2014, the brewery is situated in the tourist-popular area of Orlando West, and is referred to as “the first regional township-branded craft beer targeting the aspiring black middle class”. Beers include the Soweto Gold Lager, Weiss Gold and the Lady Gold.

“The Festival of Beer is about bringing beer champions from all over the country together to get a taste of the best brews on the local and international market”, says Martin Tucker, co-founder the Festival of Beer. “We are thrilled to be heading back to Jozi again this year, a place that holds a lot of passion and promise in the brewing industry and visitors can look forward to plenty of exciting features and surprises up our sleeves this year”.

After the undeniable success of the inaugural 2013 event, Polo South Africa is proud to announce the Polo International Horse Trials 2014, which will be taking place in the heart of Kyalami between the 3rd and 5th of October.

Johannesburg, September 2014 – This extreme equestrian event will be filled with adrenalin-spiked moments for those who enjoy the thrill of the sport. Galloping over 5km of cross-country jumping tracks, riders and their horses will be challenged with a series of ditches, water complexes, and the infamous ‘broken bridge’.

For many people, the sport of Horse Trials or Eventing – presents the ultimate challenge of horsemanship because it requires horse and rider to perform three totally different activities within the same competition: dressage, cross country and show jumping.  To conquer one phase, or even two is not enough to win – and so the competition develops and so does the pressure.

To offer her insight and experience, South African rider and Polo International Horse Trials 2013 winner, Hayley Parker, will be taking a short break from her international campaign to host course walks and co-present the television programme.  Recently qualified at the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials to compete at the highest level, Hayley was compared to the British number one eventer, William Fox-Pitt for her skill in not falling off over a jump that had caught out most of the top International riders.

Less than 20 minutes from Sandton, the picturesque Inanda Country Base provides the perfect location for such an event. Key highlights that spectators will be able to enjoy over the weekend include the Polo Chill Area that is situated within the water complex, activities such as Art Jamming, water slides and pony rides for children. The 2014 Pink Pony Brunch meanwhile caters to invitees and VIPs, who will have the chance to see the launch of the POLO Spring/Summer ‘14 range.

A new addition to the trials, the 5km ‘Pink Pony Walkathon’ will be held to promote the cause of breast cancer awareness. This fun family walk starts at 08h00 on the Polo field, with entry at just R25.00 per person and all proceeds going towards the cause. The walk is open to all ages, and all ‘pets on a leash’ are welcome too. There will also be prizes to be won for participating walkers.

According to event organisers, “The Polo International Horse Trials showcase the talent, courage and determination of South Africa’s top athletes, while also offering a rewarding day out for the whole family. We are excited to see what this year’s event will bring, and wish riders and their horses the best of luck.”

Celebrating its five year milestone with a fresh rebrand, the month of November will see the return of the popular FoodWineDesign Fair, which has been renamed the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary (FoodWineDesign) Fair.

Having established itself as Joburg’s favourite boutique event, the Fair returns this year with several exciting special projects up its sleeve. “We have had very encouraging feedback on the bold name change from FoodWineDesign to the Handmade Contemporary Fair,” says Fair curator, Roberta Thatcher. “For us our new name encompasses all the curatorial work that goes into this event to bring together true artisans immersed in their craft.”

As part of the experience of the newly rebranded Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair, Artlogic will bring this concept to life in a unique special project. From leather workers, to jewellers, ice cream makers and hand pulled noodle experts, several artisans will take turns to temporarily showcase their craft in a dedicated space at the Fair. Visitors will be able to view these producers at work and interact with them, thus gaining an exclusive glimpse into the studio life of artisans.

“Another special project we’re excited about is Chefs in the City,” says Roberta. “This project will see three top chefs – David Higgs of the Saxon Boutique Hotel, Michael Holenstein from De Hoek Country House, and Thom Hughes of the Griffin, Perron and Steamworks, taking turns to treat visitors to their signature dishes.”

The Fair will once again take place on the rooftop of Hyde Park Corner, an ideal venue which offers the perfect combination of urban chic, convenience and gorgeous city views. What’s more, the spatial restrictions of the roof mean that the Fair has grown in quality, rather than quantity, with talented producers competing for a space in the exclusive event.  Apart from returning exhibitors such as Dark Horse, YSWARA, and Dear Rae, fans can expect newcomers such as jeweller, Kirsten Goss, Hemma Furniture, Lulu and Marula and Nigerian fashion designer, Tae Afrika, who will be showcasing her new range, straight off the catwalks of Lagos.

They consider themselves more of a collective rather than a traditional band, have no need for vowels and blazed the trail for Afrofuturism in South Africa for over a decade. After being chosen to open for the Foo Fighters at FNB’s Soccer City in Soweto in December, the BLK JKS are paying it forward by giving one unknown male vocalist the opportunity to join them onstage for a one song, once-in-a-lifetime rock star moment. We caught up with guitarist Mpumi Ncata to talk about fate, comfort dressing and breaking all the stereotypes.

Okay, so we have to ask, why are you guys looking for a male vocalist in particular?

Female energy is a very powerful thing, a universe unto itself…  We just don’t think we ready for that jelly.

What are the qualities that a BLK JKS frontman should possess?

Well, the BLK JKS are not a very “frontman” orientated type of band. We don’t really subscribe to most stereotypes, so whoever does sing with us just has to be himself – you know, unique, like everybody else…

There’s no doubt it will be an epic experience for him. Can you tell us about your most memorable performance?

The Fillmore/Irving Plaza in Manhattan to close off the Felabration Festival with Femi Kuti was pretty nice, so was the South Bank in London with SquarePusher… Both times we were just like, “No turning back now…” This is as much for everyone who believed in us as much as those who doubted…  Because: Intense.

What was the first thing that went through your mind when you got the call you’d be opening for the Foo Fighters?

We were in different places, I was in Cape Town sitting in on an edit for a film I’ve been working on when [our drummer] Tshepang called me about it, probably from his studio while working with Moonchild, my first thought was, “It’s a sign. Please elaborate on this. It’s a sign.”

Is there any one particular Foo Fighters song that’s made a huge impression on you?

“Hero” is great. I also quite like that new one, “Rope”. I heard that at an internet cafe in Paris last November while I was stranded there without a visa, trying to join the guys in London for the rest of our tour with our other band Motel Mari, that track lifted my spirits.

 When and how did you love of music first begin? What was the catalyst?

Music videos got me deep into music. Things like the Peter Gabriel Sledge Hammer video, which I think was the first one I saw on MTV, and then seeing Sade underwater in a wedding dress. Those things brought me much closer to sound.

What does style mean to you?

To me, comfort is everything… Not just a physical comfort, but one that goes through the whole person, inside and out. They’re comfortable with themselves, not trying too hard. That’s style. But, as far as I’m concerned, there is no going out without good hats, good shades and good shoes (shout out to PUMA for the kicks).

Do you have one piece of clothing that you really, will-wear-it-until-it-falls-apart love?

I have this leather jacket that was passed down to me, from one great punk to the another, knife holes in it and everything, but it’s so beautiful…I’ll be sad when I have to hand it over to next generation.

Is it true you’re working on new material – can you tell us a little bit about what you guys have planned?

Yes – and simply put, we plan to keep rocking and experimenting. Recently BLK JKS got a shotgun horn section of two in, and it’s been very inspiring playing with these cats… Things are about to get wild.

Solange Knowles and Alan Ferguson said “I do” to each other at the Marigny Opera House in New Orleans yesterday afternoon.

Solange, who was the epitome of elegance, wore a Humberto Leon for Kenzo floor-length white gown with an attached cape for the ceremony. The newly wed donned a pre-wedding look upon arrival on a bike at the venue in a cream coloured Stephanie Rolland plunging pantsuit. Solange’s hair was styled in her signature afro and she added a pop of colour to her looks with crimson lips which she kept throughout the day.

The bridal party consisted of 100 close family and friends, including sister Beyonce, Jay Z, their daughter Blue Ivy and mom Tina who were all dressed in various shades of white.
