INTERVIEW WITH FOO FIGHTERS FRONTMAN, DAVID GROHL

The Red Bulletin| Interview with David Grohl, front man of the Foo Fighters

Dave Grohl became world famous in the1990s as the drummer for Nirvana and hasremained stellar ever since. He’s the leadsinger of Foo Fighters (eight albums, 11 million copies sold, many awards and hugeworld tours) and has worked on musicalprojects with, among others, David Bowie,Paul McCartney, Nine Inch Nails andQueens Of The Stone Age. Last year heproduced his first film, Sound City, a documentary about the titular LosAngeles music studio. Now he’s drivingSonic Highways, an ambitious projectmerging the eighth Foo Fighters album, out in November, with an eight-partTV series in which Grohl shows the bandrecording the album in studios acrossAmerica and interviews artists associatedwith those studios, including Dolly Parton,Joe Walsh, Chuck D, Willie Nelson andRick Rubin. There’s also a sit-down withBarack Obama. When he met The Red Bulletin recently, the 45-year-old swappedthe questioning for answer duty.

Dave Grohl

The Red Bulletin: You were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame this year as part of Nirvana. Why did you only have female singers for your performance at the ceremony?

Grohl: Because Kurt [Cobain] was a feminist. And someone suggested Joan Jett. I mean, Joan Jett she’s the first lady of rock ’n’ roll. She’s the one. Then it was like: “What about Kim Gordon?” She and Kurt were great friends, they loved each other and Sonic Youth were our heroes. “Yeah, let’s get Kim.”

And you had Lorde from New Zealand.

Lorde was my idea. Her song Royals is its own little revolution in the sea of bullshit.

Is that sea what you referred to recently as ‘stripper pop’?

Pop music in America right now is so superficial. It’s fun to listen to, to turn up in your car when you’re in traffic, but there’s no substance at all. It’s devoid of any meaning. I’m not just saying that as a 45-year-old rock musician, I’m saying that as a human being. If the number one song is about your butt, that’s a problem. So when I heard Royals in the middle of all of these other songs, I thought, “Thank God! Someone’s singing something that actually has a little bit of something.”

Guy carved out a career in music despite having no education and no money. Echoes of the Dave Grohl story?

Buddy’s the greatest ever as far as I’m concerned. He made his first guitar from wires in his screen porch and wood. I’m a high-school dropout from Springfield, Virginia. I never graduated school and I never had enough money for college. I worked manual jobs and played noisy punk rock music. Now I’m in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and I get to sit and talk to the President about music. I’m not saying what a great guy I am, but I want everyone to imagine that same opportunity is possible.

What do you do with all your money?

It goes straight into my bank account, where it turns all mouldy and smelly.

No investments, nothing like that?

I don’t waste my time thinking about how I could make more when I’ve already got enough. I’m not a banker, I’m a musician. However, at the same time it buys me freedom, of course. It allows me to do what I want to do and not having to worry about anything at all.

No houses, no big, fat cars?

I drive a family car – not a monster SUV, but a family car that fits five people. I’ve got a house that is just big enough, too. My only status symbol would be 606, my studio in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. I’ve invested a fortune to make it look exactly like Abba’s legendary Atlantis studio. I’m not kidding: that’s what I was after and it cost me a lot to have that dream come alive.

Is making music the analogue way becoming a lost art?

I hope I don’t sound like a boring old fart here, but let’s be honest: it never hurt nobody to practise your instrument, to develop an ear for rhythm and melody.

So what do you think of EDM?

What the heck are you talking about? Don’t speak in riddles, man!

Electronic dance music. Skrillex, Deadmau5, etc.

That’s what that is called? It’s simply not my kind of music. What’s more, it’s nothing new. Artists like Suicide or Atari Teenage Riot have been doing it for decades and are still doing it way better.

What kind of relationship do you have with social networking?

Honestly, I haven’t got a clue. I’m not on Facebook or on Instagram and it’s because I don’t care. If I want to talk to people I just call them up or text them. Yet, for my 75-year-old mother, it makes perfect sense, simply because she doesn’t have too many people to talk to anymore, she hardly leaves the house and she is lonely. She’s like, ‘You’re living in the past, dear. Let me show you how to Twitter.’ Maybe if I reach her age then I’ll launch my first personal website, by Dave Grohl, retired rock star.

Courtney Love wants to make a Nirvana biopic. Who should play Dave Grohl?

I guess Robert Rodriguez would be my favourite, just because he’s so cool, but I just don’t think it’s going to happen.

The Duke And Duchess Of Cambridge Attend Cleveland Cavaliers v. Brooklyn Nets

Royalty meets royalty last night at the Brooklyn Nets Basketball game in New York City as Beyonce and Jay Z met William and Kate, the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge.

Kate and William were beaming as they greeted and exchanged words with the couple before they returned to their courtside seats next to basketball legend, Dikembe Mutombo. Meanwhile, Bey and Jay took to their seats directly opposite the Royal couple.

Kensington Place courtiers had previously arranged with NBA officials that the two couples would meet during the third and fourth quarters of the game at the Barclays Center, which also starred basketball royalty: the Cavaliers’ LeBron James, dubbed ‘King James’.

Backstage at the game, the royal couple were given a yellow #7 jersey with the word ‘Cambridge’ on it as a gift from the Cavaliers, as well as a smaller red jersey for their one-year-old son, Prince George.

Can we just have a moment of silence for how adorable George’s shirt is?

GRACETOWN! THE WINNING BAND TO OPEN THE ELECTRIC VINES MUSIC FESTIVAL

Grace-Town

Last night four impressive upcoming bands battled it out on stage at Aces ‘n Spades bar in Cape Town, to win the coveted prize of becoming the Opening Act at the Electric Vines New Years Eve Musicfest, to play beside the likes of Prime Circle, Jimmy Nevis and Jesse Clegg, to name but a few who will be performing at this Stellar line up of Music Stars.

Jono Grayson was up first and performed brilliantly, very confident in front of the 150 throng of guests who were there to support their favourite band. He was very well supported and the judges were definitely impressed. Next up was Texas Radio who made a blast onto the stage with their young, breathtaking energy and presence. This band were in complete contrast to Grayson, two totally opposite genres of music and performances.  Jackal and the Wind had an amazing confidence and were full of fun and brilliance, they had a crowd up dancing during their first song and were a truly positive fun band to watch.  The last band GraceTown made a superb impression on the crowd, with the kind of music that has everyone up on their feet. Energetic, positive with great melodies you could see that these four young guys were really enjoying performing for the crowd.

The judges had a very difficult decision and there was much debate between Jimmy Nevis, Louise Day and Craig Reid.  Whilst the decision was being made Paul Snodgrass, who MC’d the event kept the crowd entertained with his brilliant humour.

Jethro Tait, GRACETOWN’s lead vocalist was ecstatic and the group were rewarded with Festival Tickets for their friends as well as a bottle of Monkey Shoulder Whisky and a box of Arabella Wine to celebrate.  The 4 band members Eckard Salo, Jethro Tait, Jericho Hendricks and Ethan Salo will be opening the Festival in front of thousands of Festivalgoers on the 30th December at Arabella Estate, Robertson. Their first publicity appearance already booked for Expresso Breakfast show where they will perform ‘Dusty Roads’ and ‘Kristan Wood’ on Thursday 11 Dec.

Well done to all the bands who made it into the Finale and who performed and created an amazing Battle of the Bands!

Moet British Independent Film Awards 2014 - After Party

The ‘Imitation Game’ star is reportedly expecting her first child with husband James Righton,  “multiple” sources told the New York Post newspaper’s Page Six magazine that she is “passed her first trimester”.

Keira 29, fueled  speculation she was pregnant at the Moët British Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday when she wore a large boxy embroidered dress to her and seemed to avoid alcohol.

The Atonement actress has previously discussed the fact that  she wants to have children but stated she would never give up her career to raise a family.

“Would I want to be a stay-at-home mother? No. On the other hand, you should be allowed to do that, as should men, without being sneered at’, she said in an interview last year.

Keira was also just nominated for the Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role  for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award. “Thank you so much to the Screen Actors Guild. It’s such an honour to be nominated by your peers and in the company of this group of talented women. I’m thrilled to celebrate  with Benedict Cumberbatch and the cast”, she said

Beyoncé’s surprise hit album celebrated it’s first birthday this past weekend, and in true Queen Bey style, she celebrated with the release of a brand-new short film.  Titled Yours and Mine, the 12 minute video features an assortment of footage from the album’s 14 videos. Beyoncé’s honyed and soft spoken voice narrates the films commentary ranging on subjects from feminism and motherhood to fame to her marriage to Jay-Z.

“People feel like they lose something when they get married, but it doesn’t have to be that way,” she explained/preached. “There is nothing more exciting than having a witness to your life. You know, everybody is not good at everything, it’s okay to depend on someone—it’s actually what we are supposed to do, we are supposed to depend on each other. And when you find the person that you trust and you love and you feel is going to respect you…it feeds you. It is the most powerful thing you can ever feel in your life.”

In-between all the panicking, gossiping and covering-up that has been going on in all the Sony media leaks, a diamond has been found in the form of a celebratory email from actor Channing Tatum to his 22 Jump Street team- it is everything we imagined and dreamed it would be.

His message that was leaked is part of a thread between him, his 22 Jump Street co-star Jonah Hill, Sony Pictures co-chair Amy Pascal, and other studio execs. After having received opening weekend numbers and the good news that 22 Jump street has come in second on the list of best-ever opening weekend for R-rated comedies, overtaking Seth MacFarlane’s TED, this is what Channing had to say:

LOVE IS PROJECT

Screen Shot 2014-12-18 at 1.06.52 PM

LIFE Line, a lifestyle brand fighting poverty with fashion by making handmade products in Kenya, announces the #loveisproject on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo in collaboration with The Supply Change, a company focused on building relationships between the design industry and global artisan communities.

The #loveisproject is driven by the handmade and beautifully crafted LOVE Bracelet, a new product designed for individuals to “wear their love,” share a movement around the world, and empower a community of women in Kenya. The campaign will run from December 9th to January 14th with a fundraising goal of $5,000 to produce the LOVE Bracelet, raise awareness, provide sustainable jobs, and connect communities through love.

“The products we wear reflect the choices we make: we hold the power to shift the fashion and lifestyle industry.  Our choices show our values and how beautiful to choose to wear LOVE, positively impact Maasai communities in Kenya, and share your individual story of LOVE with the world. We have the ability to make choices that empower individuals through economic opportunities, and in this case, it’s as simple as deciding what we put on our wrist. We can all know and share our LOVE.  And that shared LOVE has the power to shift the world.” LIFE Line Founder and Executive Director, Zane Wilemon.

The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group of semi-nomadic people inhabiting southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. The LOVE Bracelet is made by LIFE Line’s Maasai Mums in their traditional beadwork, creating sustainable income and empowering women to provide for their families through entrepreneurial opportunities. Beaded with red to represent bravery, strength, and unity among the Maasai, the LOVE Bracelet connects the maker and the wearer around the world with a common purpose. Chrissie Lam, founder of The Supply Change, designed the bracelet with the Maasai in April 2013 and spent the summer of 2014 traveling the globe with her bracelet, inspired to ask friends and strangers alike what love meant to them. Through the creation of this photo concept, the #loveisproject was born.

20141201150105-8-LoveIsProject_Logo-Wht

“This summer, I traveled to 18 countries in 2 months, meeting 127 people of 48 nationalities. From Siberia, Russia and the Gobi Desert of Mongolia to Israel and Palestine, I photographed people along the way wearing the LOVE Bracelet as they shared what love meant to them. Even in the most remote places on earth, I discovered love everywhere and in everyone. People’s excitement for the project inspired a movement to increase empathy and understanding, fuel empowerment, and bring us all a little closer together.” Chrissie Lam, The Supply Change

LIFE Line and The Supply Change are making the LOVE Bracelet available through the #loveisproject Indiegogo Campaign at: bit.ly/loveisproject. With an aligning vision to connect people all over the world, join forces to make ideas happen, and empower contributors to bring dreams to life, Indiegogo provides the perfect platform for the #loveisproject. The LIFE Line and Supply Change team are excited to share the LOVE Bracelet in the spirit of “ubuntu: I am because we are,” and invite individuals to join the movement of empowerment and love.

Make a well-known character or story from US history, add a willing narrator, stir in some A list actors, and then sprinkle in some alcohol – well; a LOT of alcohol.  Wine, whisky, beer, vodka…it really doesn’t matter, as long as there’s a lot of it:  What do you get when you mix up this heady cocktail?  You don’t get history…You get something infinitely better, funnier and much more potent: you get “Drunk History”.

Drunk History (Season 1) airs on Comedy Central (DStv Channel 122) Monday to Friday from Monday 22 December @ 23:50 CAT.

Created for television by series host Derek Waters (@derekwaterss) and director Jeremy Konner, Drunk History partners inebriated storytellers up with A-list talent as they go on a tour through familiar and less familiar events from America’s past – reenacting great moments as the narrators stumble and slur their way through the re-telling.  With breaks for top ups, toilet trips and even a nap or too along the way – Drunk History provides get a new perspective on US culture – with unforgettable and hysterical results.

Intrepid narrators staggering their way through history’s great moments have included Kurt Braunohler, Paget Brewster, Eric Edelstein, Mark Gagliardi, Jen Kirkman, Morgan Murphy, Kyle Kinane, Natasha Leggero and Jenny Slate.   Fumbling and slurring their way through profiles on figures and seminal events, the narrators apply the Drunk History treatment to events such as the Watergate scandal, the invention of cocaine, the FBI’s attempt to assassinate Martin Luther King Jr., the invention of cereal by the Kellogg brothers, Dolly Parton’s separation from the man who made her famous, the midnight ride of Sybil Ludington, the Baltimore plot to assassinate Lincoln, and the Joe Louis v. Max Schmeling boxing fixtures of the late 1930s.  Other luminaries of Ameri an history targeted by the show include Edgar Allan Poe, Nellie Bly, Benedict Arnold, Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders, Patty Hearst, and Lewis and Clark.

Among the guest stars obliged to act out the tipsy narratives verbatim are Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Courteney Cox, Don Cheadle, Jim Carey, Laura Dern, Johnny Knoxville, John Lithgow, Patton Oswalt, Jordan Peele, Chris Parnell, Jason Ritter, Jeffrey Ross, Winona Ryder, Kristen Wiig, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Zooey Deschanel and Jason Momoa.

Based on the award-winning and wildly popular web series, “Drunk History”; the show was created for television by Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner. Drunk History is produced by Gary Sanchez Productions and executive produced by Waters and Konner, along with Gary Sanchez Productions’ Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Owen Burke.
