Wherever you plan to be on Friday June24, you might want to change your plans once you learn what’s scheduled on MTV Base.

On the next episode of MTV Base’s Behind The Story, Kelly Khumalo tells all on her heartbreak, scandal and tragedy, and will be opening up about events that were never made public. Here are three things you can expect to hear about:

1. Jub Jub relationship and trial

Speaking to Sizwe Dhlomo, Kelly explains that it was a very ‘strange time” in her life: “I was with a partner who was going through a very serious case, who was also very abusive, emotionally and physically, who does not appreciate anything. I was trying to be a mother… I was left very confused. I was very broken.”

2. Her high-profile relationship with the late Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa

“I only found out when I was two to three months pregnant with my second child [that he was married],” reflects Kelly. “As much as I loved Senzo, I feel like that relationship was a waste of my time and energy. My relationship with him was actually a waste – a delay of my life and my career – and I don’t think I deserved all those unnecessary ups and downs.”

3. The scandal around her substance abuse

Even though her drug history has been publicised, Kelly finally opens up about her addiction, even remarking that she would “go to church high”.

Do not miss the interview on Friday June 24, 5.30pm and 6pm on MTV Base, channel 322.

Local film Mrs Right Guy continues to shine at the box office after passing the R3 million mark following its opening weekend on June 3.During its release week, the film was pitted against international blockbusters such as X-Men – Apocalypse, Angry Birds and Alice Through The Looking Glass, and yet managed to be more than successful.

“Audience support for Mrs Right Guy has been great, and is ongoing as word of mouth spreads,” says producer Khethiwe Ngcobo. Producer Cati Weinek further added that “That’s what happens when you have a strong cast, a good story and excellent production values.”

A QUICK GUIDE TO EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BREXIT

via GIPHY

For the uninitiated, Brexit has been a topic in the news almost every single day for the past four months. But if you don’t know what it is and what’s going on, we thought we’d break it down for you so you know exactly what’s going on.

What exactly is Brexit?

Brexit is short for “British Exit” from the European Union (EU). The UK has been discussing a referendum – which they will be voting on today – on whether or not they should leave the EU, so that it can essentially give the UK the freedom to manage its own affairs.

First and foremost, what is the EU?

Wait, what is a referendum?

A referendum is basically a vote in which the public (everyone of voting age) can take part, normally giving a “yes” or “no” answer to a question. Whichever side gets more than half of all votes cast is considered to have won.

Okay, but why is this referendum thing happening?

“The British government has promised to hold a referendum on EU membership before the end of 2017. There have been growing calls for a vote on whether to stay or leave the union, as it has grown and become more powerful.

In the past, the UK has chosen to opt out of some key EU decisions, like the single currency or euro and the Schengen Treaty, which relaxed border controls. Prime Minister David Cameron wants Britain to stay in the EU, if certain changes are made to the rules – including lower benefits paid to migrants and greater protection for states not in the Eurozone.

Critics believe Britain is being held back by the EU, gets little in return for the money it pays in and would be better off taking back control of its borders.” (BBC.com)

Why is this referendum so important?

It’s kind of a big deal, because it not only impacts the UK, but the rest of the world too. Here are some reasons from Huffington Post on the reasons and implications of the UK leaving or staying.

Reasons to stay in:

  1. Jobs

It affects the decision, ability and chances to work abroad. Millions of jobs are linked to the EU membership, but there’s little evidence to show how many would be in jeopardy if the UK left.

  1. Trade

Some of Britain’s biggest trading partners are in the EU, and more than 50 percent of the UK’s exports go to EU countries. Membership to the EU allows them to have a say over how trading rules are drawn up.

  1. Travel and work

It’s easier than ever to work and travel abroad. Around 1.4 million British people live abroad in the EU. Membership makes movement around the continent simple.

  1. Crime fighting

The European Arrest Warrant allows criminals to be brought to justice across the EU.

  1. Global influence

The EU is the world’s biggest market and plays a big role in world trade, climate change issues, development projects and more.

Reasons to leave:

  1. Border control

Border control would be back in the UK’s hands. Many argue that attempts to control immigration into the UK will fail as long as they remain in the EU. This makes applying and working abroad for non-UK citizens extremely difficult.

  1. Cost saving

Estimates suggest membership costs around £24 million (R514 726 510.56) per day when rebates and other receipts are taken into account.

  1. Democracy

Laws made by the directly elected European parliament supersede legislation made by individual member state parliaments.

  1. Other countries exist outside

For example, Norway, which trades with the EU without being in it, controls its own farming and fishing, rather than being bound by EU quotas.

Demi Lovato’s friends, family and fans are apparently concerned about her recent behaviour. According to sources, the starlet is becoming increasingly erratic.

“The first thing she does every day is to look at [list of publications] to see who they’re talking about. If there’s something about [another singer] and [another singer] and nothing about her, she gets annoyed. Then she says stupid shit about other people to get attention and then acts all shocked when there’s a backlash.

“It’s confusing AF to be around her because she’s totally schizo about wanting attention. You spend an hour with her and she’s like: Pay attention to me! Why are you all paying attention to me? Stop paying attention to me! Why isn’t anyone paying attention to me?

I don’t know what’s going on because I don’t spend 24/7 with her, but she seems to be having some kind of a meltdown.”

Well, we sure hope she gets some help…

STOP. EVERYTHING! According to unconfirmed reports, Drizzy may be heading back to South Africa! The rumour mill started spinning when a Twitter user posted a pic of her aunt posing with the Canadian rapper. The clanger: her aunt works for an embassy abroad where Drake was – according to the user – applying for an SA visa.

Adding further fuel to the fire, radio personality TB Touch last year announced that he was planning on bringing Drake (and Floyd Mayweather) to our sunny shores in 2016.

Oh, be still our beating hearts. If this is legit, you’ll be sure to see at the airport waiting to greet Dreezy with a ‘Marry Me Drake’ poster. Rihanna, who?

BREASTFEEDING CAN SAVE LIVES OF THOUSANDS OF INFANTS AFFECTED BY SEVERE DROUGHT

In this week’s issue of Grazia (pg 26 to be exact) Sonja Raath discussed the worst drought disaster in Africa that the continent has seen in 50 years; and the implications thereof. #GoGetYourGrazia to read all about it and find out what you can do to help.

Not only does this drought affect and impact food, water and sanitation but it also poses a health risk especially to thousands of infantsin drought ridden areas. According to the South African Breastfeeding Reserve (SABR) this can be largely mitigated by simply supporting and encouraging breastfeeding mothers.

“Disaster areas are particularly dangerous for infants because their fragile immune systems struggle to cope with stressors like overcrowding, lack of access to clean water and lack of quality medical treatment” says Stasha Jordan, breastfeeding activist and executive director of the SABR.

Diarrhoea is rarely fatal in adults, but it kills over 2 million children under the age of 5 each year around the world. Up to 90% of deaths in emergency situations are due to diarrhoea.1 To compound this tragedy, many of these deaths are avoidable through breastfeeding.

A stark illustration of this fact is the investigation by the Centre for Disease Classification (CDC) into the deaths of more than 500 children in Botswana in 2005-06 after a major flood. The study found that nearly all the babies who died were formula fed, and that breastfeeding infants were almost entirely spared.2

Some of these deaths result directly from contaminated water, but even access to clean drinking water does not guarantee an infant’s safety. The United Nations Refugee Agency has found that “insufficient water means that containers and utensils used for mixing milk are often dirty, thus making secondary contamination highly probable. [Dried skim milk], [dried whole milk] or infant formula that are reconstituted with contaminated water are ideal media for breeding harmful bacteria.”3

Proper cleaning and sterilising of cleaning implements, surfaces and hands consumes enormous amounts of water. Feeding an infant eight times a day on formula requires 24 litres of clean water per day, and about 170 litres per week.4

Yet each time there is a humanitarian disaster, aid agencies are flooded with donations of breastmilk substitutes. This stems from a widespread misconception that, during disasters, women’s breastmilk is somehow compromised.5

“Many mothers are worried that, during times of stress or hunger, their breastmilk will not be sufficient to provide for their baby’s needs, and so they are swayed into formula feeding by well-meaning aid workers,” says Jordan, “The irony is that continuing to breastfeed is the single most healthy thing that they could do for their child,” she adds

Karleen Gribble and Nina Berry, two leading academics on breastfeeding, state unambiguously that “mothers who are exclusively breastfeeding are able to continue to provide food to their infants regardless of the stress they might be experiencing and their own access to food” and that “exclusive breastfeeding could be considered an emergency preparedness activity.”4

Five of our provinces have already been declared disaster areas as a result of the drought, and millions of the country’s poorest people are struggling to access enough clean water. In that context, supporting breastfeeding mothers is more vital than ever.

“It is our collective responsibility as a society to ensure that babies who are already being breastfed continue to be and that babies who are not breastfed re-start breastfeeding,” says Jordan. ”Together we can help prevent a humanitarian disaster and save the lives of thousands of infants,” she concludes.

To get involved and alleviate the challenges faced by the SABR, including low breastfeeding rates in South Africa, sourcing donor mothers and funding for the operation of the milk-banks, please visit www.sabr.org.za or call 011 482 1920 or e-mail: info@sabr.org.za.

CALVIN CLAIMS TAYLOR IS “CONTROLLING THE MEDIA”

On page 18 of this week’s issue of Grazia, we’re calling BS on Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston’s supposed relationship. For Taylor – someone who seems to be into long-term commitment and loves hard – she sure moved on fast. Only two weeks after her break-up with long-term BF DJ Calvin Harris, Tay-Tay was spotted snogging British actor Tom, and we’re calling the fauxmance a publicity stunt. Get all the deets in this week’s issue. #GoGetYourGrazia for the full scoop.

Turns out we are right. Calvin started slamming Taylor and spilling the beans on their break-up via comments on his very own IG page. Damn.

While these comments have since been deleted, they were screengrabbed before being taken off the web.

According to the fans who captured the moments, the DJ/music producer started replying to a number of Swift fans who obvs were questioning the real reason for the split, and, well, his responses definitely prove Taylor is not as innocent as she makes herself appear in the media:

At the end of the day, Calvin doesn’t hate Taylor at all (something he said to a fan when asked if he does). Can someone let the sun out ‘cause there is so much shade going on at the moment!

On Wednesday, the dancer and TV personality posted an Instagram video raising his views on the public’s criticism that it’s always the same faces on TV.

In the video, he explained why he is tired of hearing people saying, “Hey, let other kids have a turn and make space for other kids.”

“Has it ever dawned on you that for us, people in the industry, this could be our only job?” he asked

After further venting, he went on to challenge any critic to “be an example and leave your job right now”.

While we’re used to Kim K breaking the internet, her hubby might just be her biggest competition this time round. The video for Famous, which dropped two days ago, features an array of naked celebs lying together on a bed.

The 11 celebs on the very long bed with Yeezy are Donald Trump, Bill Cosby, Rihanna – who is lying next to Chris Brown, Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, George Bush, Ray J, Amber Rose, Caitlyn Jenner and Anna Wintour.

So the real question is – why were these specific celebs chosen?

REMEMBERING BILL CUNNINGHAM

This past weekend, we mourned the loss of another legend: Bill Cunningham, the great fashion photographer who spent 40 years chronicling the ever-changing trends and fads of fashion.

After his time in the Korean war, Bill started his career as a fashion reporter for the Chicago Tribune and then later worked for Women’s Wear Daily.

“At the Times, his street-fashion column ‘On the Street’, begun in 1978, was a mainstay of the style section. Almost always dressed in a bright blue jacket, Bill, an iconic figure who travelled by bicycle, made his name traversing New York’s city blocks with a camera hanging from his neck.

“We all dress for Bill,” Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has said. The New Yorker dubbed his recurring feature as, “New York’s high-school yearbook; an exuberant, sometimes retroactively embarrassing chronicle of the way we looked. The column, in its way, is as much a portrait of New York at a given moment in time as any sociological tract or census – a snapshot of the city.” (USA Today).

In 2010, a documentary film about the iconic cycling photographer came to fruition and became an unusual craze. Bill, as depicted in the documentary, humble as always, claimed to his death that he had never nor would watch it, according to the Times.

His obituary really describes him best:

He didn’t go to the movies. He didn’t own a television. He ate breakfast nearly every day at the Stage Star Deli on West 55th Street, where a cup of coffee and a sausage, egg and cheese could be had until very recently for under $3. He lived until 2010 in a studio above Carnegie Hall amid rows and rows of file cabinets, where he kept all of his negatives. He slept on a single-size cot, showered in a shared bathroom and, when he was asked why he spent years ripping up checks from magazines like Details (which he helped Annie Flanders launch in 1982), said: “Money’s the cheapest thing. Liberty and freedom is the most expensive.”

Over the weekend, tributes from friends and fans, from people Like Naomi Campbell and Iris Apfel to various designers, started pouring in:

5 REASONS JESSE WILLIAMS SHOULD RUN FOR OFFICE

(Image: Youtube screenshot)

Last night, actor Jesse Williams, 34, was awarded the Humanitarian Award for his activism at the 2016 BET Awards held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

His inspiring and empowering speech, which we believe is bound be the vision and mission statement for the Black Lives Matter movement, earned him a standing ovation.

After wiping our eyes and blowing our noses following his speech, we came to the conclusion that Jesse Williams deserves to be president – and here are five reasons why:

jesse

1. HE’S INSPIRATIONAL

Later in the show, Samuel L. Jackson said he hadn’t heard a speech like it since the 60s (presumably referring to activist Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream Speech”).

2. HIS HUMILITY IS PRAISEWORTHY

In his speech, he refused to take credit and give the usual “thanks mom and dad” monologue. Instead, Jessie recognised, honoured and thanked each person who was and is doing their part to fight the system that has “divide[d] and impoverish[ed]” the black people in America.

3. HE’S A PROUD FEMINIST

Jesse recognsied and accredited the role women play in “spending their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves”.

4. HE REFUSES TO FOCUS SOLELY ON THE FUTURE WHEN REMNANTS FROM THE PAST STILL LINGER

Jesse acknowledged that Saturday June 23 would have been Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday (back in 2012, Tamir was shot and killed by two policemen in a city park) and paid tribute to him and other black victims like Sandra Bland, Eric Garner and Darrien Hunt who were killed by police. He spoke about how he refuses to accept “how far we’ve come” when killings like this are still happening.

5. HE APPROACHED THE TOPIC OF BEING ‘FREE’ IN ‘THE LAND OF THE FREE’ AND TOOK ON THE CRITICS OF THE RESISTANCE

“Burying black people out of sight and out of mind, while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold. Ghettoising and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is, just because we’re magic, doesn’t mean we’re not real.” ‘Nuff said.

Read Jesse’s inspiring full speech here:

“This award, this is not for me. This is for the real organisers all over the country. The activists, the civil rights attorneys, the struggling parents, the families, the teachers, the students who are realising that a system built to divide and impoverish and destroy us cannot stand if we do. It’s kind of basic mathematics – the more we learn about who we are and how we got here, the more we will mobilise. Now this is also for the black women, in particular, who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves. We can and will do better for you.

Now what we’ve been doing is looking at the data and we know that police somehow manage to de-escalate, disarm and not kill white people every day. So what’s going to happen is we are going to have equal rights and justice in our own country or we will restructure their function and ours.

Yesterday would’ve been young Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday, so I don’t want to hear anymore about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on a 12-year-old playing alone in a park in broad daylight, killing him on television, then going home to make a sandwich. Tell Rekia Boyd how it’s so much better to live in 2012 than 1612 or 1712. Tell that to Eric Garner. Tell that to Sandra Bland. Tell that to Darrien Hunt.

Now the thing is though, all of us in here getting money, that alone isn’t going to stop this. Now dedicating our lives to get money just to give it right back for someone’s brand on our body, when we spent centuries praying with brands on our bodies and now we pray to get paid for brands on our bodies.

There has been no war that we have not fought and died on the front lines of. There has been no job we haven’t done, there’s been no tax they haven’t levied against us, and we’ve paid all of them. But freedom is somehow always conditional here, ‘You’re free,’ they keep telling us, ‘But she would’ve been alive if she hadn’t acted so… free.’

Freedom is always coming in the hereafter, but, you know what though, the hereafter is a hustle. And let’s get a couple of things straight, just a little side note, the burden of the brutalised is not to comfort the bystander. That’s not our job, stop with all that. If you have a critique for the resistance, our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression. If you have no interest in equal rights for black people, then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down.

We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind, while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, black gold. Ghettoising and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit. The thing is, just because we’re magic, doesn’t mean we’re not real.”

THE 2016 BET AWARDS MOMENTS THAT MADE US SAY OMG

We’ve covered the best fashion moments from the 2016 BET awards held on Sunday June 26, now it’s time to fill you in on the good bits you may have missed.

Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar blow up on stage

Ever since the Formation video dropped, Beyoncé has been seen as a political singer of sorts, so it came as no surprise when the singer belted Freedom, another song from her visual album, Lemonade. What made the performance, with its water splashes, bursts of fire and mist, even more exciting was the guest appearance of rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Jesse Williams gives the best speech of the night

Though Black Coffee being the first South African to win a BET Award and Beyoncé’s electrifying performance were highlights of the awards evening, it was Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams who stole the show when he was honoured with BET’s Humanitarian Award. In October 2014, the 34-year-old joined protests in Ferguson, Missouri, to campaign against the shooting of Michael Brown. He was also an executive producer of Stay Woke, a documentary about the Black Lives Matter movement, that premièred in May. He has written extensively on BLM movement and met with President Obama earlier this year to discuss his humanitarian work. His acceptance speech was so powerful that it received a standing ovation midway – even Samuel L Jackson remarked later in the show that he hadn’t heard a speech like it since the 1960s.

Prince is remembered and honoured

It was supposed to be a single performance that would pay tribute to the late Prince, but it developed into a full collaboration ensemble that featured big names in the industry singing all Prince’s hit songs. The performers included Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Erykah Badu, Jennifer Hudson, Tori Kelly, Sheila E and more.

We all seemed to have learned that saying whatever you please on Twitter is never a good idea, especially for celebs. Another example was yet again made when after hearing the powerful speech Jesse Williams made at the 2016 BET Awards, Justin Timberlake took to the social media platform to voice his admiration. The pop sensation was ‘inspired’ by the speech, which led to numerous reactions towards his initial tweet. One in particular reaction took a jab at JT, and the singer’s reply to that tweet caused an even bigger commotion. See it all unfold here:

After the star realised that the tweet directed to Ernest Owens was not received well at all, he began to follow up with a string of apology tweets:

Oh Justin!…that’s all we have to say.

Oops Trevor…

The Daily Show came under serious fire this morning for a Twitter post about abortion.

Recently, Texas abortion clinics challenged a 2013 Texas state law and regulation that cut the number of abortion providers to roughly 20, which left women seeking abortions with limited options. The Supreme Court decided to side with the clinics and strike down the ruling, making it a big day in the fight for abortion rights and access to reproductive healthcare in the state.

The Daily Show responded to the news by tweeting:

The Twitterverse immediately called out the show on its insensitivity and expressed disappointment at it joking about a topic as serious as abortion. The Daily Show has since issued a tweet in defence of its “joke”.

A source recently told E! news that Tyga and Kylie “Started seeing each other again romantically. It’s not as much pressure this time around because they both have had some space over the past few weeks apart. Tyga wants to get back with Kylie though. Tyga says that [she is] his wifey, in good or bad.”

Kylie further made their relationship official when she posted a pic of herself posing on her bed and tagged Tyga.

In what is believed to be yet another Isil (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) attack, a triple suicide bombing took place last night at Instanbul’s international Ataturk Airport, which is the third busiest airport in Europe.

According to The Telegraph, the bombers detonated explosive vests in the arrival hall of the airport. The bombers were reportedly trying to pass through X-ray machines at the passport control when they were stopped by Turkish security officials. At this point the bombers opened fire with AK-47 rifles and airport officers returned shots.

The Daily Mail reports that according to a Turkish official, two of the attackers detonated their explosives at the terminal entrance after being fired upon by police, while the third blew himself up in the car park.

Two South African tourists, Paul and Susie Roos from Cape Town, were at the airport and due to fly home at the time of the explosions. “We came up the escalator from the arrivals to the departures when we heard shots going off,” Paul told news agencies.

According to The Daily Mail, South African Judy Favish, who spent two days in Istanbul as a layover on her way home from Dublin, had just checked in when she heard an explosion followed by gunfire and a loud bang. She says she hid under the counter for some time and that passengers were ushered to a cafeteria at basement level where they were kept for more than an hour before being allowed outside.
