Pearl out and about 5

Actress and Lip Sync Battle Africa host Pearl Thusi is not only a successful businesswoman, but a phenomenal mother to her eight-year-old daughter, Thandolwethu Mokoena. Juggling a successful career and being a full-time mom is a skill we admire in all mothers.

Recently, Pearl spoke out on social media about being conscious of how her decisions impact her daughter.

She also discussed how she prefers to spend quality time with her daughter, saying she’ll rather go to a park with Thandolwethu than the gym. It’s the small things that count and, as they say, money can’t buy happiness.

JENNIFER ANISTON PENS EMPOWERING PERSONAL ESSAY

(Image: Getty)

Our favourite friend and golden girl, Jennifer Aniston, has had enough of the media speculation about whether or not she’s pregnant and starting a family with hubby Justin Theroux. Read what she has to say in this empowering op-ed piece that she wrote for the Huffington Post:

Let me start by saying that addressing gossip is something I have never done.  I don’t like to give energy to the business of lies, but I wanted to participate in a larger conversation that has already begun and needs to continue. Since I’m not on social media, I decided to put my thoughts here in writing.
For the record, I am not pregnant. What I am is fed up. I’m fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of “journalism,” the “First Amendment” and “celebrity news.”

Every day my husband and I are harassed by dozens of aggressive photographers staked outside our home who will go to shocking lengths to obtain any kind of photo, even if it means endangering us or the unlucky pedestrians who happen to be nearby. But setting aside the public safety aspect, I want to focus on the bigger picture of what this insane tabloid ritual represents to all of us.
If I am some kind of symbol to some people out there, then clearly I am an example of the lens through which we, as a society, view our mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, female friends and colleagues. The objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing. The way I am portrayed by the media is simply a reflection of how we see and portray women in general, measured against some warped standard of beauty. Sometimes cultural standards just need a different perspective so we can see them for what they really are — a collective acceptance… a subconscious agreement. We are in charge of our agreement. Little girls everywhere are absorbing our agreement, passive or otherwise. And it begins early. The message that girls are not pretty unless they’re incredibly thin, that they’re not worthy of our attention unless they look like a supermodel or an actress on the cover of a magazine is something we’re all willingly buying into. This conditioning is something girls then carry into womanhood. We use celebrity “news” to perpetuate this dehumanizing view of females, focused solely on one’s physical appearance, which tabloids turn into a sporting event of speculation. Is she pregnant? Is she eating too much? Has she let herself go? Is her marriage on the rocks because the camera detects some physical “imperfection”?

I used to tell myself that tabloids were like comic books, not to be taken seriously, just a soap opera for people to follow when they need a distraction. But I really can’t tell myself that anymore because the reality is the stalking and objectification I’ve experienced first-hand, going on decades now, reflects the warped way we calculate a woman’s worth.
This past month in particular has illuminated for me how much we define a woman’s value based on her marital and maternal status. The sheer amount of resources being spent right now by press trying to simply uncover whether or not I am pregnant (for the bajillionth time… but who’s counting) points to the perpetuation of this notion that women are somehow incomplete, unsuccessful, or unhappy if they’re not married with children. In this last boring news cycle about my personal life there have been mass shootings, wildfires, major decisions by the Supreme Court, an upcoming election, and any number of more newsworthy issues that “journalists” could dedicate their resources towards.

Here’s where I come out on this topic: we are complete with or without a mate, with or without a child. We get to decide for ourselves what is beautiful when it comes to our bodies. That decision is ours and ours alone. Let’s make that decision for ourselves and for the young women in this world who look to us as examples. Let’s make that decision consciously, outside of the tabloid noise. We don’t need to be married or mothers to be complete. We get to determine our own “happily ever after” for ourselves.
I have grown tired of being part of this narrative. Yes, I may become a mother some day, and since I’m laying it all out there, if I ever do, I will be the first to let you know. But I’m not in pursuit of motherhood because I feel incomplete in some way, as our celebrity news culture would lead us all to believe. I resent being made to feel “less than” because my body is changing and/or I had a burger for lunch and was photographed from a weird angle and therefore deemed one of two things: “pregnant” or “fat.” Not to mention the painful awkwardness that comes with being congratulated by friends, coworkers and strangers alike on one’s fictional pregnancy (often a dozen times in a single day).

From years of experience, I’ve learned tabloid practices, however dangerous, will not change, at least not any time soon. What can change is our awareness and reaction to the toxic messages buried within these seemingly harmless stories served up as truth and shaping our ideas of who we are. We get to decide how much we buy into what’s being served up, and maybe some day the tabloids will be forced to see the world through a different, more humanized lens because consumers have just stopped buying the bullshit.

Rock Girl, soon-to-be BRAVE, is a grassroots female-led and female-oriented organisation working in violent areas of the Cape Flats. We are proud to announce that we are partnering with design industry leader Southern Guild to host our upcoming relaunch in their gallery on 30 July 2016: a sit down dinner, fundraising auction and awards ceremony.

For the last six years, BRAVE, previously Rock Girl, has been working with girls in the gang-ridden areas of Cape Town as an educational program focusing on design and media, to introduce the girls to story-telling, documentary making and media. BRAVE aims to: invest in, inspire and encourage the next generation of bold and powerful females, regardless of their circumstances.

BRAVE are hoping to raise enough funds at this event to send the girls on their next road trip across the country, where they will document the stories of other girls and inspirational female role models they meet along the way.

All proceeds from the event go toward funding the upcoming road trip, allowing our girls the opportunity to give a voice to their peers all over the country and learning invaluable lessons and confidence from the priceless gift of travel.

Meeting other girls across South Africa. We have so much in common. Together we are strong. #rockgirlontheroad

THE #WINNING SERENA EFFECT TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM

Yup, the Serena effect is a thing. It’s safe to say that Serena Williams, 34, is one of the greatest female athletes of our time, making history after winning her 7th Wimbledon title and 22nd Grand Slam singles title – at the same time (a record previously held by former tennis star Steffi Graf).

We don’t know about you, but Saturday July 9 was a day we set aside to support Serena in the Wimbledon 2016 Ladies Final against Angelique Kerber. We bought snacks, drinks, rallied up the troops and sat with baited breath as we watched the two battle it out for the title.

As she held the Venus Rose Water Dish after her exhilarating win, Serena said: “It has been incredibly difficult not to think about [Steffi’s record]. I had a couple of tries this year, but lost to two great opponents. But it makes the victory even sweeter to know how hard I worked for it.”

Making the day even more eventful was seeing Beyoncé in the crowd to support Serena, who made a cameo on Bey’s song Sorry from the Lemonade visual album. It gave us all the #BlackGirlMagic and #winning feels.

Okay, so apart from serving as a muse to Bey and making tennis history, Serena wins in many, many more ways… The tennis player is also a fashion designer, philanthropist and the highest-paid female athlete.

We want to know – were you also watching the final?

Make sure you #GoGetYourGrazia with Serena as our cover girl for the full story on how she overcame adversity, stepped out of bigger sister Venus’ shadow and has dealt with her body image throughout the years.

The nominees for the 2016 Emmy Awards have been announced, and for the first time in its 68-year history, actors of colour are nominated in all six leading actor categories.

This year’s nominees include Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) for Lead Actor in a Drama; Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) and Taraji P Henson (Empire) for Lead Actress in a Drama; Anthony Anderson (Black-ish) and Aziz Ansari (Master Of None) for Lead Actor in a Comedy; Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish) for Lead Actress in a Comedy; Idris Elba (Luther), Cuba Gooding Jr (The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story), and Courtney B Vance (The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story) for Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie; and Audra McDonald (Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar And Grill) and Kerry Washington (Confirmation) for Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

This is great news, as diversity in awards shows was a hot topic this year when no actors of colour were nominated for the 2016 Academy Awards.

The 68th Emmy Awards 2016 will be broadcast on September 18. Stay tuned for time and channel details.

GUGU ZULU PASSED AWAY WHILE CLIMBING KILIMANJARO

The Nelson Mandela Foundation made the heart-breaking announcement today that Volkswagen race car driver Gugu Zulu, 38, passed away early this morning while trying to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Zulu, along with his wife, Letshego Zulu, were part of a team of people who were climbing the mountain for the Trek4Mandela expedition led by experienced mountaineer Sibusiso Vilane.

“Details are sketchy. What we do know is that Gugu experienced problems breathing. The medical team supporting the trek put him on a drip and they descended the mountain with him. We are informed that the medical teams tried everything possible to save his life,” the foundation said.

Sello Hatang, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said: “I am devastated. I knew him well. I recruited him to climb Kilimanjaro. The last thing he said to me at the airport before he left last week was that he wanted to speak about doing other Mandela Day projects. I feel a huge sense of loss.”

The team was set to reach the summit of the mountain today for Mandela Day.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Zulu’s wife, his one-year-old daughter and friends and family during this difficult time.

DO YOU SPEAK 2016?

We’re halfway through the year, and our  vocab is overflowing with social media speak, Kardashianisms and motivational encouragement from DJ Khaled. Major keys, people. Major keys…

kourt slob kebobs

In this week’s Grazia (#GoGetYourGrazia), we break down the meaning of popular 2016 terminology like “woke”, “fingermouthing”, “snatched” and “major keys”. For example:

“Woke”

Technically we have Erykah Badu to thank for introducing us to “woke” in her 2008 and single Master Teacher. In the wake of movements like Black Lives Matter as well as a greater understanding of white privilege and cultural appropriation, the word has never been bigger. To be woke is to be aware, to have knowledge  of what is happening in the world and, most importantly, why.

“Major Key”

DJKhaled_Snap_

The producer, mogul and rapper DJ Khaled has been sharing his motivational know-how on Snapchat all year. BY July 29, his signature phrase, “major key”, will become the title of his debut album out on Sony. For the record,, major keys are items or actions that are essential for success and living the good life. For Khaled, these include turkey bacon and a lot of pillows.”

If you’re anything like us, you would assume that older sister Kate would be a bridesmaid, never mind Matron of Honour, but your assumption would be wrong. Kate will in fact not be part of the bridal party. Why? Because she would be upstaging the bride on her big day.

According to royals author Judy Wade: “It’s a tricky situation for Pippa. She would want her sister by her side, as who else would she trust to make things go well?” she tells People magazine. “But if your sister is a future queen, she is going to upstage the bride and draw attention. Kate would want to be in the background as much as possible.”

Bridesmaid or no, we’re sure Kate will be supporting her little sis no matter what!

Michelle Obama, America’s First Lady (aka FLOTUS), finally joined forces with James Corden on his popular carpool karaoke insert – and these two did not disappoint!

The pair took a tour around the White House while listening to some music (obvs!) before heading out and about around Washington D.C. while discussing what it’s really like living in the US president’s official residence.

“I rarely get to listen to music in the car,” the First Lady admitted. “Months ago, when my daughter was learning to drive, was the only time in seven and a half years that I’ve been in the passenger seat listening to music and rocking out like this.”

Apart from singing along and dancing to Bey’s Single Ladies, the best moment of the segment was when the OG female rapper Missy Elliot made a surprise guest appearance and sang along to This Is For My Girls with Michelle and James.

The second best moment? The secret service tweeting the following: “Thank you @JKCorden and the @thelatelateshow for bringing @FLOTUS home safe and sound after #CarpoolKaraoke. We were watching.”

Magic. Pure, pure magic.

Check out the video below. Obvs, Michelle is the best!

Users can now search for flights to select destinations using their favourite emoji characters

Cheapflights.co.za, the global flight search and travel deals website, launched the world’s first emoji flight search function, enabling mobile users to insert emojis instead of words for their flight origin and destination as they begin their search.

In order to build the functionality, Cheapflights mapped 40 destinations across the world with popular emojis based on common associations with each destination. For example, users can search using a South African flag and a union jack flag to get flights from South Africa to London, and a koala bear and sushi for Sydney to Tokyo.

Android-Screenshots.co.za-keyboard

Iphone-Screenshots.co.za

Android-Screenshots.co.za

Launching initially as a prototype, Cheapflights is the first flight search engine to use its proprietary search technology in this way. The release follows the launch last month of Cheapflights Chat – a Facebook Messenger bot configured to provide flight, hotel and weather-related results upon query, which has already seen more than 4 947 interactions. Cheapflights Chat is today also updated to include emoji search functionality as well.

Commenting, Samantha Otter, Cheapflights’ Marketing Director said:

“We want to make travel search as intuitive as possible, and delivering this new functionality furthers our brand promise to make search smart and simple. Personalisation is the future of travel search, and this is a further step in that direction, allowing our users to communicate with us in a way they’re comfortable. It encourages frictionless dialogue in whichever setting and communication medium they prefer.

Emoji search is available on the Cheapflights mobile site in select markets globally including South Africa, the UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. It will be available on the Cheapflights app before the end of 2016.

Pretty neat, huh?

Top Billing presenter Bonang Matheba has given away two bursaries to two young women.

Last week, we reported that a girl, Asanda, took to Twitter to ask for help to pay her 2nd semester of varsity. After the tweet went viral and reached Bonang, the TV presenter responded by asking Asanda to DM her her details. And today, Asanda’s opportunity became a reality.

Bonang not only assisted Asanda in financing the remainder of her fees, she also helped another fan, Xoli, by giving her a bursary to Boston House. Bonang took to her IG to explain that Xoli called into her radio show asking Bonang to help with her tuition. Now, just a few weeks later, Xoli is registered for her course and ready to start studying!

Bonang wrote on Instagram: “I’m dedicating my 2016 to helping, changing and inspiring the lives of young women!”  She added that the “Bonang Matheba Bursaries” will launch soon.

Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna reportedly argued while being filmed for Keeping Up With The Kardashians.  He also shared a Snapchat video of a bloody scratch on his arm, saying, “Look what she did to me, psycho bitch.” It was then reported that they unfollowed each other on social media after the arguments, and Rob had deleted all images from his Instagram profile. Since then, rumours are swirling that the argument was triggered by Rob discovering “suspicious messages on her phone”.  But this doesn’t seem to phase Blac at all, as she shared a video of herself doing her make-up later in the day, with her huge engagement ring clearly visible. This isn’t the first time Rob has caused speculation of a split – in March, the reality star deleted all his Instagram photos. However, he explained the move by saying: “Chy and I are not broken up, we just feel like it would be a lot healthier for our relationship if we kept a lot more to ourselves. It’s impossible to have a positive relationship with so much negativity from the media and outsiders, and we would appreciate it if everyone respects that.”

METRO’S WHOSE SHOW IS IT ANYWAY UNDER REVIEW

After receiving criticism and complaints about the new radio show, Whose Show Is It Anyway, Metro FM has decided to review the responses and act accordingly. The morning show, hosted by Somizi, Khanyi Mbau and Ntombi Ncobo, has been on air for just one week, but the negative feedback from listeners has caused management to investigate the issues.

“Obviously management would have to do a thorough evaluation of what it is about the show that is causing the outcry, but they cannot base their findings on the audience’s reaction alone,” said SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago.

Kaizer further told Sowetan Live that it will take some time to find the root of the problem.

LADY NAM’S MOST PROFOUND ROLE TO DATE

Screen Shot 2016-07-26 at 1.34.31 PM

Working alongside Laurence Fishburne and Orlando Jones, something Nambitha Ben-Mazwi gets to add to her already accredited career achievement list. “Lady Nam” as she’s know within the industry, took her career to a whole new level as Nandi in Madiba. Described as her “most profound role to date”, we caught up with the 27-year-old talented actress and found out more about her exciting announcement.

What was it like shooting this production MADIBA, alongside Mark Elderkin, Laurence Fishburne, David Harewood, Orlando Jones like?

I worked closely with Laurence Fishburne and Orlando Jones. It isn’t difficult to be charmed by them both, but what  I particularly loved was how real, open and honest our conversations were, on and off set. Having lived in NYC, we immediately had that bond as they felt I understood them and the straight up forwardness that New Yorkers have. We connected on a artist level, a human level and we often engaged in dinner party talks where we all learnt from each other. I particularly liked that about them as often established stars with years of experience often “know it all”, but as much as I was a sponge with them, they too were a sponge with me, and we all wanted to hear more from each other as far as our past, experiences and opinions are. There was also a lot of banter, laughter and just nasty silliness–particularly with Orlando Jones. We truly created a great connection and I plan to catch up with them soon as they promised to find me a gay husband in LA that can provide me with a green card! I will be going back to the states again in the fall.

What can we expect from your character?

I play a small yet one of my most profound roles to date – an 18 year old girl called Nandi. Her story plays true to many everyday stories that women faced during the apartheid era. She is in love with her fiance, Welcome, a man caught between a rock and a hard place seeking the law expertise from Orlando Tambo and Nelson Mandela. She later goes through a traumatic experience alongside Nelson Mandela that tests a very raw, dark and emotional place for me as an actor.

This series was particularly important for you in terms of capturing raw, real and vulnerable footage. How did you embrace that?

It truly was. Born from a family that was politically active during apartheid, with my grandmother who has a book and street name (Ben-Mazwi) named after her, due to her service and role she played as a nurse in that era. My uncle,actor/playwright veteran Winston Ntshona used his talent alongside John Kani and Athol Fugard to put on plays around the world as a form of protest during apartheid, later saw them win a Broadway Tony award. I am strongly influenced by these two people in my family, and playing a role that was close to my heart from my experiences during the turbulent times, I had to tap into raw moments from my past, my families past and use that to make my difference through telling Nandi’s story. I captured videos of myself getting into character in my trailer, something that was rather different but therapeutic to watch back, as I transform and carry the life and heartache of my character, Nandi.

How do you relate your own life to that of your character?

I don’t! ha ha. She is 18, is engaged and carries burdens and life problems I can’t even fathom to understand. But as an actor, I have to tap into my own life, past and research into the life Nandi had. I used my own pain, my families apartheid stories and went into a method actors process in order to relate to Nandi and carry her burdens, fears, dreams, past and day to day thoughts.

Would you describe this as your most in-depth character to date, which truly tested your acting skills the most?

No doubt! Acting on Black Mirror as an american was a challenge, but slipping into accents and dialects is a different challenge. Taking on raw emotions by far is more in-depth.

Why is this series important to you as an actress?

It tells our story. As africans, as South Africans, it shows the world where we come from, it shows the unsung heroes and shows the everyday story of the regular south african that was living and being affected by the apartheid regime. It’s also therapy, for us as actors and for us as south africans. It’s never easy reliving a painful past, but sometimes it is necessary to help remind us of where we have come from and how far we have grown. That reminder to me is my mark in being able to have a platform and show my peers who will watch- that we need to treat the opportunities we have today, as if they were gone tomorrow. Our country is at a sensitive time, we need healing and this series I hope will help give us perspective as far as our actions going forward.

What important message can you take out of the series that you want the viewers to embrace?

Our pain, our past does not define us. We have a choice in life, always, and it is up t us what choice we make in moving forward and leaving a legacy for the future.

When will the series be released and where can we catch it?

No release date has been released as yet.
